Commercial Driver I

(Non-Supervisory)

NATURE OF WORK:

Entry-level, full-time, non-exempt position requiring the safe operation of commercial refuse and recycling vehicles, as well as heavy equipment, for the collection, transport, and disposal of solid waste and recycled materials. The applicant must be capable of performing essential functions under the stress of operating heavy equipment in both urban and rural traffic. This role may involve competing demands, multitasking, meeting deadlines, delivering professional customer service, and effectively handling customer complaints. Schedules may include extended hours, early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Transport waste or recycling materials from county community collection sites and transfer stations to the SCSWA Corralitos Regional Landfill or a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF).
• Operate combination tractor-trailers, specialized refuse trucks, and heavy equipment, including but not limited to roll-offs, grapplers, automated side-loaders, commercial front-loaders, backhoes, front-end loaders, chippers, and shredders in urban, rural, and highway settings.
• Complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections (e.g., checking fluids, tires, lights) and minor repairs; identify maintenance needing to be addressed by fleet mechanics.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned abiding by all Authority policies and procedures

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
• Minimum of three (3) years of experience operating vehicles with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of at least 66,000 pounds and manual transmission.

Licenses/Certification(s):

• Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required.
• No DUI or DWI convictions within the past twenty-four (24) months.
• No moving violations within the past twelve (12) months.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association (FMCSA)
• Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
• Workplace safety and customer service best practices.
• Computer and mobile device application data entry and use.
• Safely operating and inspecting heavy equipment and commercial vehicles.
• Perform repetitive, short-cycle tasks while maintaining attention to detail.
• Communicate with staff and the public respectfully and professionally.
• Read and write basic instructions and record keeping.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND PHYSICAL FACTORS

• Work is performed and includes exposure to all weather conditions, noise, dust, fumes, and dirt. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is provided, including safety vests, gloves, shoes, respirators, hearing protection, and eye protection.
• The employee must have the ability to frequently move or reposition up to 50lbs of materials or objects.

WORK SITUATION FACTORS:

• Subject to mandatory drug and alcohol testing under Federal DOT regulations.
