JOB DESCRIPTION

(Non-Supervisory)

Job Title: Fleet Technician II

Pay Grade: UG06 Effective Date: January 2026

NATURE OF WORK:

Perform repairs, maintenance, and service as directed by Foremen or Administrator on various

types of solid waste equipment, on the road trucks, and light duty vehicles.

Must furnish own hand tools to perform minor repairs; requires shift work and working alone with

occasional overtime. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of

services. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal

regulations and SCSWA policy.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Inspects, repairs and maintains mechanical components on a variety of diesel-powered and

gasoline-powered equipment.

• Conducts vehicle safety inspections; provides preventive maintenance; checks fluid levels;

checks/adjusts brakes; changes oil; checks and services batteries and charging systems;

checks and services cooling systems; lubricates vehicles and equipment.

• Performs field service calls to repair equipment or vehicles; transports equipment to and from

work sites and repair shops; delivers fuel to equipment.

• Inspect, operate, or test equipment to diagnose equipment malfunctions.
• Dismantle machines, equipment, or trucks to access and remove defective parts, using hoists,

cranes, hand tools, or power tools.

• Perform routine maintenance, such as inspecting drives, motors, hoses, or belts, checking fluid

levels, replacing filters, or doing other preventive maintenance actions.

• Diagnose mechanical problems and determine how to correct them, checking online repair

sources, repair manuals, or parts catalogs, as necessary.

• Repair machines, equipment, or trucks, using tools such as hammers, torches, saws, drills,

pneumatic air tools, wrenches, or equipment such as precision measuring instruments or

electrical or electronic testing devices.

• Maintain or repair specialized equipment or machinery located at remote sites or at recycling

facility.

• Assemble, install, or repair wiring, electrical or electronic components, machinery, or

equipment.

• Clean or lubricate shafts, bearings, gears, or other parts of machinery. Order parts, supplies, or

equipment from catalogs or suppliers.

• Plan and layout repair work, using work orders, emails, callouts, maintenance manuals, or

schematic diagrams.

• Perform general cleaning duties of equipment needing repair.
• Operate cutting torches or welding equipment to cut or join metal parts.
• Record type and cost of maintenance or repair work both on paper and electronically.
• Test and diagnose equipment with electronic diagnostic tools.
• Install aftermarket equipment, i.e.: GPS units, radios, cameras, etc.
• MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Required: Associate degree/Automotive/Diesel Trade School AND three (3) years of
• Heavy equipment experience required or 6 years' experience in a professional shop,
• working on heavy equipment, with certificates for up-to-date technical classes attended.
• Preferred: ASE certification, Heavy Equipment Experience, Welding and Fabrication Experience.
• Licenses/Certifications: Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required.
• No DUI or DWI convictions within the past twenty-four (24) months.
• No moving violations within the past twelve (12) months.
• KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Considerable knowledge of: Gasoline and diesel diagnostic procedures and methods; operational characteristics of light and heavy automotive and motorized equipment; operations and care of internal combustion engines; preventive maintenance procedures regarding light and heavy vehicles and motorized equipment; methods and techniques of performing diagnostic and troubleshooting services; methods and materials used in welding and fabrication.
• Ability to: Use standard repair tools and equipment; navigate across even and uneven surfaces; use a personal computer and various software applications; perform technical reading and writing; maintain written records; establish effective working relationships. Skills in: Equipment and tool use. Basic computer skills are required. Maintaining accurate records and updating information in various mediums and formats; Has a basic understanding of electrical schematics
• ENVIRONMENTAL AND PHYSICAL FACTORS Environmental factors: Work is performed in a warehouse, maintenance facility or out in the field. Exposure to hazards including but not limited to all types of fumes/liquids/chemicals, trash, used syringes, electrical shocks, sharp objects and all types of weather conditions Physical factors: Heavy physical work involves bending, stooping, climbing, crouching, kneeling and squatting; ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds; ability to move around the maintenance area; ability to enter/exit vehicles.
• WORK SITUATION FACTORS: Position involves working extended hours and on-call status. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and South Central Solid Waste Authority policies.

Pay: $19.14 - $26.96 per hour
