Data Scientist – Statistics / Operations Research
Location: Portsmouth, RI
Estimated Salary: $85,000–$102,000 per year
About the Role
This role focuses on translating business needs into analytical solutions and turning data insights into real-world applications. You will develop and implement statistical models, AI/ML methods, and advanced analytics to support organisational goals in risk management and loss prevention.
You’ll join a collaborative team of data and analytics professionals and work closely with operations, innovation, technology, underwriting, and engineering groups. This is a position that encourages exploration, innovation, and the use of emerging technologies.
Responsibilities
- Plan, conduct, and advise on analytics projects using AI/ML with minimal supervision
- Build statistical, ML, and deep learning models for large-scale, real-world problems
- Apply advanced statistical methods to support organisational mission and objectives
- Work cross-functionally with multiple internal departments
- Lead full-cycle data science projects from design to deployment
Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Statistics, Biostatistics, or Operations Research with 2 years of industry experience or Master’s with 5 years of experience
- 5 years of experience in data processing, statistical analysis, and modelling using Python, R, or SQL
- 2 years of experience with cloud analytics platforms (e.g., Databricks)
- Advanced knowledge of:
- Generalized Linear Models
- Model regularization
- Probability distributions
- Hypothesis testing and inference
- Machine learning (Random Forests, clustering, gradient boosting, etc.)
- Simulation and experiment design
- Non-parametric statistics
- Proven experience leading end-to-end data science projects
- Experience in risk management or property insurance is strongly preferred
