Alternative Learning Center Teacher

Position Summary

A full-time teacher is needed to provide academic, behavioral, and social-emotional support to students in a structured, small-group learning environment. The teacher will create a positive and supportive classroom where students can continue their academic learning while developing the skills and strategies needed to successfully transition to a traditional classroom setting.

The teacher will design and deliver short-term, individualized and small-group learning experiences that support students' academic progress, self-regulation, decision-making, conflict resolution, and positive school behaviors. The teacher will collaborate closely with school administrators, teachers, families, and other support staff to help students experience success and prepare for their transition back to the traditional school environment.

This is a full-time, benefited, 10-month position. Salary is based on previous teaching experience.

Preference will be given to applicants with a background in special education, behavioral supports, counseling, or experience working with students who benefit from additional academic and behavioral support.

Requirements

Educational & Certification Requirements:

• Degree: Bachelor’s degree or higher in Education or a related field from an accredited college or university.
• Certification: Holds or is eligible for a Maryland Professional Educator Certificate

Training and Experience
Experience in education, special education, guidance/counseling, social work, behavioral support, or a related field is preferred. Experience supporting students with diverse academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs is highly desirable.

• Assess and monitor students' academic and behavioral progress.
• Differentiate instruction to meet individual student needs.
• Maintain clear expectations, consistent routines, and appropriate documentation of student progress.
• Create a safe, structured, respectful, and welcoming learning environment.
• Support students in developing the skills and confidence necessary for a successful transition to their next educational setting.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Plan and provide appropriate academic instruction aligned with students' courses, grade-level expectations, and individual needs.
• Develop daily lesson plans and structured learning activities that support both academic achievement and student growth.
• Monitor student attendance, academic performance, behavioral progress, and completion of assigned coursework.
• Maintain accurate records and communicate student progress regularly with administration and appropriate school staff.
• Teach and reinforce skills related to self-regulation, communication, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and positive decision-making.
• Establish consistent classroom routines and expectations that promote student responsibility and engagement.
• Implement individualized behavioral strategies and supports when appropriate.
• Collaborate with students, families, teachers, counselors, administrators, and other staff to develop and monitor student success plans.
• Provide students with feedback, encouragement, and opportunities to reflect on their progress.
• Participate in transition planning to support students as they prepare to return to a traditional classroom or move to another appropriate educational setting.
• Maintain a safe, organized, respectful, and student-centered classroom environment.
• Communicate promptly with administration regarding significant student concerns, progress, or needs.

Full time teacher needed to assist students with behavioral issues in a small group setting. Qualified teachers should be able to implement behavioral strategies to assist the students in returning to a whole classroom environment. This is a full time, benefitted 10 month position. Salary is based on previous teaching experience.

To design and deliver a short term program of sequential activities that will help students with behavioral problems change and return to the regular school population.

Preference given to applicants with Specical Education background.

Requirements

Educational Requirements - Standard Professional Certification or Guidance Certification.

Training and Experience Requirement - Teacher must be certified in Education, Guidance/Special Education or Social Work.

• Ability to work with students to help them control their anger and solve conflicts in a peaceful manner.
• The ability to design activities to help achieve and reinforce desired behaviors.

• The ability to assess both academic and behavioral progress.
• Maintain a safe and happy learning environment for all students.

  DUTIES:

• Plan a course of study for students to follow.
• Generate lesson plans for the activities to be utilized each day.
• Keep office informed of attendance and progress of students in class.
• Keep a neat and clean work area and classroom.
• Teach students social skills and how to display proper behavior so they may return to the regular school population.
• Keep administration informed of any problems that may occur.
