Description
Under direction of the Stable Supervisor, performs duties to effectively operate an equestrian stable, including feeding and grooming of horses, care of tack, cleaning stalls, and preparation of horses and ponies for riding lessons, lead line, and pony parties. Oversees daily barn chores. Responsible for leading barn staff and barn assignments in the absence of the Supervisor or Manager. Ensure horses are doctored daily and as directed by the vet or Stable Supervisor. Feed horses’ grain, supplements, and hay; be able to read and follow written instructions on feed chart and stall signs. Ensure staff and volunteers prepare and give correct types and amounts to each horse. Groom horses, inspecting for wounds; pull manes and trim horses’ polls, and fetlocks. Check horses for lost or loose shoes. Clean and organize feed room, tack room, and barns. Keep Stable Supervisor apprised of sensitive/difficult situations through regular communication. Shares feedback on employee work ethic, abilities, and achievements in preparation for performance reviews. Report and submit maintenance requests to Stable Supervisor. Respond to and implement basic boarder requests. Direct advanced boarder requests to Stable Manager. Ensure boarder needs are met as assigned by Manager or Supervisor. Assist Supervisor in communicating changes to staff and volunteers. Record services in boarder’s logbook. Oversee daily barn chores and ensure staff and volunteers are completing assigned tasks. Oversee pony rides during the pony parties and lead line; assist in leading ponies. Prepare horses for lessons, trail rides, special events, and pony parties. Present tacked horses to riders in a timely manner. Ensure trail guides are ready to go. Ensure rules and safety procedures are followed and announced to public riders. Oversee care for tack (bits, bridles, girths, stirrup leathers, saddles, stirrup pads, and reins) and ensure all is in good repair. Tack horses. Clean tack and report repairs and make minor repairs as necessary. Oversee first aid kit, AED, emergency lights, fire extinguisher, and eye wash station logs. Perform other duties as assigned by the Park Commission.
Qualifications
Ability to perform simple maintenance tasks. Ability to adjust work schedule to include some evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required for the proper care of the horses. The Stable Supervisor and Stable Shift Lead are expected to maintain complementary schedules to ensure consistent leadership coverage. Whenever one is unavailable to work, the other should be scheduled to provide oversight and support. This arrangement helps ensure the stable remains fully staffed, operates efficiently, and maintains a high standard of daily care and operations. Ability to perform physical tasks under varying weather conditions. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to work professionally with the general public, boarders and be a team player is crucial. Must have a valid driver's license. Must have a minimum of one year’s experience as a stable worker or equivalent equestrian experience. Must be experienced English saddle rider. Ability to work safely and comfortably around horses and farm equipment.
