Position Summary
The Staff Accountant will play a key role in the accounting operations of a financial services mortgage company, supporting complex reconciliations, month-end close, and financial reporting activities. This role requires a seasoned accounting professional with strong analytical skills, hands-on SAP experience, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, regulated environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform and review complex daily, weekly, and monthly reconciliations, including general ledger, bank, escrow, loan, and suspense accounts.
- Prepare, review, and post journal entries in SAP, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and proper supporting documentation.
- Lead assigned aspects of the month-end and year-end close processes, including account analysis and variance investigation.
- Ensure financial records comply with GAAP, company policies, and internal control requirements.
- Reconcile and analyze mortgage-related transactions such as loan funding, servicing, escrow, and investor reporting accounts.
- Partner with internal teams to research and resolve discrepancies and improve accounting processes.
- Prepare schedules and documentation for audits, regulatory examinations, and management review.
- Utilize advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, formulas, data analysis) to support reconciliations and reporting.
- Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency, accuracy, and timeliness.
- Provide guidance and informal mentoring to junior accounting staff as needed.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required).
- 5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within financial services, mortgage, or banking.
- Strong reconciliation experience, including high-volume or complex accounts.
- Hands-on experience using SAP for general ledger and financial transactions.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Solid understanding of GAAP and internal controls.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple deadlines.
