What are the responsibilities and job description for the Underground Heavy Equipment Mechanic (Drifter/Drill Repair) position at SMS Equipment Inc.?
SMS Equipment is expanding our underground operations in Alaska, and we’re hiring a Heavy Duty Mechanic with hands-on experience in the heavy equipment industry. This role focuses on component rebuilds and rockdrill diagnostics in a clean, well-equipped shop environment.
Base Wage: $35.94 - $51.34 per hour, dependent upon experience. Additional premiums may apply.
Location: Anchorage, AK.
Schedule: 5x2 (Monday to Friday).
What You’ll Do
- Use measuring tools and precision equipment to assess wear, tolerances, and overall equipment condition.
- Support underground operations by troubleshooting mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues on mobile and stationary mining equipment.
- Maintain detailed service reports, timecards, and warranty documentation.
- Travel to customer sites as needed.
- Support continuous improvement by keeping work areas clean, organized, and ready for the next task.
What You Bring
The successful candidate will have a minimum of 3 years of experience working with underground mining equipment. Equivalent combinations of education and shop-based experience may be considered. Other requirements include:
- Experience with Montabert drifters, bolters and jumbos is an asset.
- Diagnostic skills in hydraulic, electronic, mechanical, and electrical systems.
- This role may involve lifting up to 50 lbs and requires being comfortable working in confined spaces.
- This position is also open to candidates with machinist or millwright backgrounds who have component rebuild experience.
