Built by the City of Chicago in 1958, the Chicago Skyway Toll Bridge (“Skyway”) is a 7.8-mile toll road connecting the Indiana Toll Road to the Dan Ryan Expressway on Chicago’s South Side. A key feature of the Skyway is the half-mile-long steel truss “High Bridge,” which spans the Calumet River and Calumet Harbor—an important route for industrial shipping. The bridge’s main span is 650 feet long and provides 125 feet of vertical clearance.

Position Summary

The Engineer in Training (EIT) Design & Construction is a safety-sensitive role that supports the planning, design, and construction oversight of civil infrastructure projects along the Chicago Skyway. This role provides hands-on exposure to roadway, structures, drainage and asset management activities under the guidance of experienced engineers and project managers. The position supports both design review and field construction activities while developing technical, analytical and project coordination skills in a fast-paced toll road operating environment.
Essential Functions (Duties and Responsibilities)
- Perform design reviews including conceptual layouts, grading, roadway, structural, and drainage components for civil engineering projects
- Support QA/QC efforts by verifying design methodologies, calculations, and technical outcomes
- Research design alternatives and document findings for project managers
- Interpret and coordinate drawings across multiple disciplines and respond to requests for information
- Support construction supervision of SCC projects, including paving, grading, roadway, structural, and drainage work
- Assist with data collection and technical analysis under supervisory guidance
- Support project scheduling, invoicing and financial tracking activities
- Assist with CAPEX forecast
- Assist with asset creation, updates and management in OpenGov
- Develop asset inventory records using MicroStation and ArcGIS
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies)
- Actively pursuing a master’s degree in engineering
- Academic transcript required as part of the application to demonstrate coursework and performance
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent attention to detail with strong analytical and multitasking abilities
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment
- Ability to read, write and understand English for job-related communication and instructions
- Engineer in Training (EIT) certification
- Working knowledge of: Microsoft Office Suite
- Knowledge of ArcGIS, OpenGov or other Asset Management Software is preferred
Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Combination of office and active construction site environments
- Exposure to outdoor conditions, construction activities and active roadway environments as required
- May require walking project sites and standing for extended periods
- Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds

Salary : $70,000 - $80,000
