SUMMARY
The Machine Operator – Steel Coil Line is responsible for operating and monitoring the steel coil processing line to safely and efficiently produce quality sheet and blank materials used in manufacturing Sioux Steel products. This role involves loading coils, using the shear, and ensuring the material meets thickness, flatness, and dimensional standards. The operator plays a critical role in maintaining production flow, equipment performance, and product quality while upholding company safety and housekeeping standards.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Operate the steel coil line by straightening and stacking product.
- Load and secure steel coils safely using cranes or forklifts.
- Monitor line operation to ensure material is processed within specified tolerances for width, thickness, and flatness.
- Adjust machine settings (speed, tension, leveling pressure) as needed to maintain consistent quality.
- Inspect materials visually and with measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, tape measure) to verify accuracy.
- Record production data including coil weight, scrap, and downtime.
- Perform routine maintenance such as cleaning rolls, lubricating parts, and removing scrap material.
- Communicate with team members and supervisors regarding material issues or equipment performance.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area following company safety and housekeeping standards.
- Follow all PPE requirements.
- Support other production areas or assist during coil changes as needed.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
EDUCATION & TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
- High School diploma or GED required
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- At least one year of experience operating machinery in a manufacturing or steel processing environment preferred.
- Familiarity with coil line operations, material handling, or roll forming is a plus.
- Ability to read and interpret work orders, production schedules, and measuring tools.
- Basic understanding of mechanical and hydraulic systems.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work safely around moving equipment and heavy materials.
