Position Purpose: The Mental Health Worker provides culturally competent biopsychosocial screenings, counseling, and case management services for clients who are in need of mental health services on the inpatient behavioral health units. This position reports to the Nurse Manager.
Key Job Activities: CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
- Charts the patient’s progress in conjunction with the specific treatment plan and every interaction that is observed or engaged in.
- Competent group facilitation and 1:1 interactions.
- Treats and cares for patients, demonstrating understanding of cognitive, physical, emotional, psychiatric illness and chronological status.
- Demonstrates technical competence necessary to provide care to unit patients; seeks out opportunities to increase competence.
- Anticipates and provides for discharge needs beginning with completion of the admission belongings form and storage of the patient’s belongings.
- Demonstrates knowledge of verbal de-escalating and safe restraint use.
- Participates actively and collaborates with multidisciplinary treatment team members in the treatment planning process to develop a common approach and obtain successful treatment outcomes.
- Demonstrates accountability and responsibility for the therapeutic milieu.
- Performs unit orientation and supports the patient’s involvement in self-care and unit activities.
- Acts as an advocate for patient rights.
- Reports to appropriate others and takes initiative to correct actual or potential incidents of staff, program ethics, environmental or equipment deficiencies.
- Takes appropriate action in anticipation of potential life-threatening or emergency situations.
EDUCATION RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
- Assumes responsibility for own clinical competency and updating clinical knowledge.
- Completes self-evaluation that demonstrates insight into your own strengths and areas of professional development.
- Completes mandatory educational requirements.
- Seeks information about current research or advances in the profession by reviewing professional literature and/or attending informational sessions.
- Actively participates in unit programs that provide clinical experiences for students and staff members.
- Participates in the development and maintenance of unit specific policies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Work Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field or five or more years’ experience in the inpatient mental health field.
- At least one year's experience in the inpatient mental health field, mental health or residential care, is required with a Bachelor's Degree or five or more years’ experience within the inpatient mental health field; experience in the substance-use treatment field is a bonus.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Successful completion of Hospital Orientation and Unit orientation programs.
- Must be culturally sensitive.
- Bilingual (Spanish) is a bonus.
- Experience in EPIC and MEDITECH software systems preferred. Certifications/Licenses:
- CPR certification required
- CPI certification within Sinai Orientation
