GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Safety Manager drives the behavior-based Safety Culture at FruitSmart and works within the Safety Steering Committee (Executive Leadership Team) to enforce FruitSmart's Environmental Health and Safety guidelines and maintain FruitSmart Safety programs. The Safety Manager leads Safety Training and develops Safety Toolbox talks for Supervisors, designs effective methods of measuring safety standards in the workplace, and conducts Safety audits on a routine basis.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead Safety Steering Committee in efforts to empower entire FruitSmart workforce to observe, analyze, and modify the behaviors of employees to prevent accidents.
- Review and develop FruitSmart programs – including PSM (Process Safety Management), procedures, training material, inspections, and audits.
- Develop Safety training requirements and ensure FruitSmart employees achieve training completion goals.
- Design methods for appraising Safety conditions in warehouses, factories, or offices.
- Inspect working conditions to ensure all products and activities are compliant with Safety guidelines.
- Oversee use of dangerous chemicals and machinery.
- Write reports detailing safety inspections findings and corrective and preventative actions.
- Suggest revisions to production methods and employee activity that do not meet health and Safety standards.
- Evaluate new and modified equipment to ensure safety guidelines are followed.
- Ensure adequate Safety PPE levels are maintained.
- Stay up to date on new state and federal health and Safety regulations.
- Lead and oversee emergency drills to gauge employee readiness.
- Consult with the Central Safety Steering Committee regarding the implementation of new Safety procedures.
- Address any workplace-related health issues and accidents.
- Develop corrective action plans with Central Safety Steering Committee.
- Work alongside Managers/employees on EHS (Environmental Health & Safety) issues.
- Process workers compensation documentation.
- Write and revise company Safety programs to maintain compliant on all safety standards.
- Provide on-call and on-site support as needed to ensure safety protocol is maintained.
- Provide guidance, coaching, mentorship and direction to Plant Supervisors and Managers to be Leaders that understand Safety procedures and effectively foster positive change management.
- Provide input to Production Management and Human Resources regarding safety-related disciplinary action.
- Develop Environmental safety program.
- Participate in platform (UGV) cross-company best practice sessions or audits across sites in-person or video (e.g. MS Teams) conferencing.
- Perform other duties as assigned including tasks which may not be reoccurring.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrates broad knowledge of state and federal Safety guidelines for the workplace.
- Able to read and interpret dense legal and federal OHSA documents.
- Demonstrates familiarity with job site machinery and products.
- Possesses strong leadership skills.

- Strong PC skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and strong writing skills.
- Demonstrates ability to remain calm and cool-headed in the event of an emergency.
Education and Experience
- Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health & Safety or related field, or a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree.
- OSHA certification is preferred.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
