What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Public Safety - Siena University position at Siena College?
Reporting to Vice President for Student Life, the Director of Public Safety provides leadership and expertise in the development and implementation of a comprehensive safety and emergency preparedness program to support the University's mission, values and strategic goals. As a senior member of the Vice President for Student Life's staff, the Director of Public Safety plays a key role in ensuring a safe and secure environment and fostering a sense of engagement throughout the campus, with an emphasis on positive and proactive interactions with all members of the Siena community, consonant with the University mission.
The Director of Public Safety is responsible for these key priorities:
- Leadership & Management: Provide overall leadership, training, supervision, and evaluation for a staff of ~20 individuals, 2-3 of whom are direct reports.
- Safety & Security Practices: Research, implement, and evaluate policies and procedures keeping in best practice for college/university safety including pending legislation, regulatory compliance, and emergency preparedness.
- Emergency Management: Direct emergency management efforts and planning as assigned by the Vice President for Student Life.
- Public Safety Investigations: Oversee and conduct investigations of campus incidents as appropriate.
- Campus Collaboration & Partnerships: Build and maintain positive working relationships with campus partners, including, but not limited to: (1) Admissions; (2) Athletics; (3) Student Activities & Leadership Development; (4) Community Living; (5) Facilities Management, (6) Student Government Organizations and the student body, etc.
- Campus Liaison with Law Enforcement: Serve as primary liaison with local, regional, federal and state law enforcement agencies and represent Siena as needed.
- Compliance & Regulatory Reporting: Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws, policies, and regulations, including, but not limited to: (1) the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act; (2) Daily Crime Log; (3) OSHA, (4) NYS Office of Fire Prevention & Control; (5) NYS Education Law 129a/ 129b, etc.
- Educational Programming: Oversee departmental efforts to provide educational programming related to safety, security, and emergency preparedness on campus. Partner with other campus offices (Health Promotion, Community Living, etc.) as well to address student needs.
- Behavioral Threat Assessment: Serve as the chair of the university's cross-functional multidisciplinary threat assessment team.
This position includes participation in a 24/7 on-call rotation system in the event of campus emergencies. The Director of Public Safety is also expected to be a visible presence on campus, and may require evening/weekend hours during peak times of the academic year.
Job Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred).
- Minimum of 10 years progressively responsible leadership experience in law enforcement, public safety, corporate security, emergency response, or similar field.
- Experience in supervisory roles in higher education public safety is preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of security related technology.
- Demonstrated experience and excellence in conducting investigations.
- Demonstrated experience in emergency preparedness and critical incident response management.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills and aptitude to work with people of different ages and temperaments and from various cultures and backgrounds.
- Superior written and oral communication skills.
- Crisis intervention and management skills.
- Demonstrated skills and experience in: planning, implementing, and evaluating programs; budget development and fiscal/statistical management; organizational goals development.
- Ability and willingness to participate in a 24/7 on call rotation and work occasional evening and weekend hours as required.
- Candidates must possess a valid driver's license and insurability at the time of appointment and must maintain such license and insurability throughout the tenure of employment.
Additional Information:
Annual Salary: $94,020
