What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tax Manager OR Audit Manager position at Sherwood Staffing Partners?
Tax Manager OR Audit Manager: Join a Growing CPA Firm in Shelton, CT
π Shelton, Connecticut | Full-Time | In-Office at first, hybrid after a few months | Send resume to michael@sherwoodsp.com
A well-established, full-service accounting and tax firm in Shelton is hiring on two fronts. We're looking for an experienced Tax Manager and an experienced Audit Manager to join our growing team. If you're a seasoned CPA ready to step into a leadership role at a firm where you'll actually be seen, heard, and developed, read on.
Why You'll Actually Love It Here
Let's start with what makes us different, because we know you have options:
- A real seat at the table. You won't be a cog in a Big 4 machine. Managers here make meaningful decisions, own client relationships end-to-end, and have direct access to partners.
- Flexible work hours. We trust you to manage your time like the professional you are.
- Business casual every day. Save the suits for client meetings that actually call for them.
- Paid health insurance for employees (spouse and dependents available at cost).
- 401(k) with employer match plus profit sharing. Your success is shared.
- Generous paid time off that you're actually encouraged to use (outside busy season, of course).
- A genuinely supportive, collaborative culture. Our team sticks around because people are treated like people. Mentorship is real here, not a buzzword.
- Career runway. We're growing, which means real opportunities to expand your book, build a team under you, and move toward partnership.
The Roles
Tax Manager: You'll manage tax engagements from start to finish, lead planning strategies for high-net-worth clients, review complex individual, corporate, partnership, trust, estate, and gift returns, and mentor a strong team of tax professionals. You'll be a trusted advisor to clients and collaborate with their legal and financial teams to deliver well-rounded counsel.
Audit Manager: You'll run audit engagements largely independently, direct and review the work of seniors and staff, review financial statements and reports, and keep multiple engagements on schedule. You'll be involved in practice development, staff supervision, and building strong client relationships.
What We're Looking For (Both Roles)
- 7 years of relevant experience in your discipline (tax or audit)
- Bachelor's or Master's in Accounting or related field
- CPA license (required for Audit Manager; strongly preferred for Tax Manager), or eligibility to sit for the exam
- Deep technical knowledge: GAAP and audit standards (Audit) or tax code across entity types (Tax)
- Comfort with the modern firm tech stack, including UltraTax, ProSystem Engagement, QuickBooks, MS Office, and various ERP and accounting platforms
- Strong communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with clients, government agencies, and financial institutions
- A leader who can mentor staff, manage multiple priorities, and hit deadlines without losing the plot
The Honest Part
This is an in-office role in Shelton, CT. Busy season (Feb 1 to Apr 15) means longer hours, often 55 per week, and limited time off during that window. We're upfront about that because we'd rather you know going in. The trade-off is a firm where the rest of the year actually breathes, your work is visible, and your growth is supported.
Compensation: Competitive and aligned with your experience, with full benefits package described above.
