Sheboygan County is seeking a Senior Staff Accountant to serve as the primary financial partner for our Transportation Department while remaining an integral member of the Finance Department. Reporting to the Deputy Finance Director and physically based within the Transportation Department, you'll bridge finance and operations by providing expert financial guidance that supports sound business decisions, regulatory compliance, and long-term fiscal sustainability.

You'll partner closely with Transportation leadership while collaborating with departments across the County to strengthen financial performance, improve processes, and ensure accountability for public resources.

What You'll Do

As the seniorsstaff accountant supporting Transportation operations, you will:

  • Lead advanced accounting, financial reporting, and operational analysis for Transportation while supporting countywide financial initiatives.

  • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.

  • Support preparation of the County's Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR).

  • Develop financial models, forecasts, cost analyses, and performance metrics that help leadership make informed decisions.

  • Serve as the primary financial advisor to Transportation leadership on budgets, capital projects, grants, and operational initiatives.

  • Assist departments with annual operating and capital budget development, budget monitoring, and variance analysis.

  • Apply GAAP, GASB, and governmental accounting standards to complex accounting transactions.

  • Recommend and implement improvements to accounting procedures, internal controls, and financial processes.

  • Support grant accounting, compliance reporting, payroll allocations, and project cost tracking.

  • Manage fixed asset accounting, capital project reporting, and inventory reconciliation.

  • Support and enhance the County's ERP financial systems.

  • Prepare reports and financial presentations for County leadership, department heads, external auditors, regulatory agencies, and the County Board.

  • Provide technical accounting guidance and mentorship to departments across the organization.

  • Support annual audits and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local reporting requirements.

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible professional accounting or financial analysis experience, preferably including governmental accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, cost analysis, or auditing.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Experience with one or more of the following is highly desirable:

  • Governmental accounting (GAAP/GASB)

  • Financial planning and analysis (FP&A)

  • Budget development and forecasting

  • Capital project accounting

  • Grant accounting and compliance

  • ERP financial systems 

  • Fixed asset accounting

  • Internal controls and audit support

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools



Salary : $71,053 - $83,491
