Job Description Summary
Part-time coaches within Shawnee State University Athletics—including both Head Coaches and Assistant Coaches—are responsible for supporting the planning, development, and administration of their respective athletic programs. These positions play an essential role in fostering a competitive, educational, and student-centered environment.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Part-time coaches may be responsible for duties including, but not limited to:
Coaching & Instruction
- Assist with planning and conducting practices, training sessions, and skill development.
- Provide instruction that aligns with program objectives, competitive standards, and student-athlete development.
- Support the development of game strategies and assist with in-game coaching.
- Assist with roster management, communication with student-athletes, and maintaining practice and competition schedules.
- Support administrative tasks such as paperwork, equipment inventory, and program organization.
- Assist in identifying and recruiting prospective student-athletes in accordance with university, conference, and NCAA guidelines (as applicable during transition periods).
- Promote academic success, personal development, and compliance among student-athletes.
- Assist with game-day preparation, travel logistics, facility setup, and supervision of team activities.
- Represent the program and university in a professional manner at all athletic events.
- Maintain knowledge of and adhere to all Shawnee State University, conference, and governing body rules and regulations.
- Report any known or suspected violations immediately to the Athletics Director or Compliance Office.
Minimum Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Terms of Employment
- Hours will vary depending on sport, season, and departmental needs.
- All part-time employees must maintain an accurate record of hours worked and submit a completed timesheet at the end of each semester. Part-time coaches cannot work more than 125 hours per month, or 1500 hours over the appointment year, to ensure compliance with the Affordable Care Act.
- Continued employment is contingent upon adherence to all university and department policies, satisfactory performance, and program needs.
Minimum Qualifications
Required trainings:
Concussion in Sports – yearly (online) (certification required)
Concussion in Sports Course
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid, and Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
Training – every two years (Athletic Training/Red Cross) (certification required)
Chapter 1 CPR Introduction - American CPR Care Association
Sudden Cardiac Arrest – yearly (online) (certification required)
NFHS Learn | Interscholastic Education, Made Easy
- Prior coaching or playing experience at the high school, collegiate, or professional level preferred.
- Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and travel as needed.
- Commitment to supporting student-athlete success academically, athletically, and personally.
- Ability to positively represent Shawnee State University and uphold the mission and values of the Athletics Department.
All part-time athletic employees must comply with Shawnee State University policies and procedures as well as Shawnee State Athletics protocols.
Failure to comply may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
