Network Technician (Freelance Contractor / Self Employed)

Overview
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Network Technician to join our IT team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for maintaining, supporting, and optimizing our network infrastructure to ensure seamless connectivity and security across all systems. This role offers the opportunity to work with cutting-edge technologies in a dynamic environment, supporting both on-premises and cloud-based networks. Duties

• Install, configure, and troubleshoot network hardware including Cisco routers, Juniper devices, Meraki access points, and Cisco ASA firewalls.
• Manage and support LAN, WAN, VLANs, MPLS, BGP, OSPF, EIGRP routing protocols, and IPsec VPNs to ensure reliable data transmission.
• Monitor network performance using tools such as SolarWinds, PRTG, and Splunk; perform vulnerability assessments and implement necessary security measures.
• Maintain network security through firewalls, IDS/IPS systems, Cisco ISE for authentication management, PKI implementations, encryption protocols like SSL/TLS, and cloud security practices.
• Support data center operations including SAN/NFS storage solutions, VMware vSphere environments, high availability configurations, and server virtualization.
• Perform system administration tasks across multiple operating systems including Windows Server, Linux distributions (Ubuntu, Debian, CentOS), BSD variants (Solaris), macOS, and openSUSE.
• Automate network configurations and deployments using scripting languages such as Bash (Unix shell), PowerShell, Python, Ansible playbooks; manage GPOs and DHCP scopes.
• Assist with network architecture design for scalable solutions involving cloud platforms like AWS and Azure; support virtualized environments with Citrix and VMware.
• Conduct regular maintenance of telecommunication systems including VoIP services with QoS support; ensure remote access via SSH, SFTP, VPNs; implement SSO solutions.
• Collaborate within Agile development teams to support DevOps initiatives; participate in SDLC processes for network-related projects.

Skills

• Extensive knowledge of computer networking concepts including TCP/IP protocols, DNS/DHCP management, Ethernet switching/routing (EIGRP, OSPF), MPLS networks.
• Hands-on experience with Cisco IOS/ASA devices; Juniper routers; Meraki cloud-managed networks; SD-WAN solutions.
• Strong understanding of network security principles: firewalls (Cisco ASA), IDS/IPS systems (Snort), VPN technologies (IPsec), encryption standards (SSL/TLS).
• Proficiency in system administration across multiple OS platforms: Windows Server environments; Linux distributions (Ubuntu, Debian); BSD variants; macOS.
• Familiarity with virtualization platforms such as VMware vSphere; cloud services including AWS and Azure; containerization concepts.
• Ability to perform vulnerability assessments using SolarWinds or similar tools; implement high availability architectures; manage load balancing solutions.
• Experience scripting with Bash (Unix shell), PowerShell or Python for automation tasks; familiarity with Ansible for configuration management.
• Knowledge of enterprise IT frameworks such as ITIL; network monitoring tools like PRTG or SolarWinds; remote access software solutions.
