The Opportunity: Leading a Complex Financial Infrastructure
We are seeking a Finance Director to join our leadership team during a period of sustainable growth. This is not a "back-office" role; it is a high-visibility leadership position. You will oversee a complex financial structure primarily funded by public sources (HUD, DHHS, MaineCare), requiring impeccable regulatory compliance and sophisticated cash-flow management.
As a key partner to the Executive Director and the Board's Finance Committee, you will ensure that every dollar entrusted to us is used to maximize our mission impact.
Finance Director Core Responsibilities1. Strategic Financial Management
- Fiscal Stewardship: Direct all financial operations, ensuring accounting procedures meet GAAP and MAAP standards while maintaining proper liquidity and risk management.
- Budgeting & Forecasting: Lead the annual $23M budgeting process. Provide the Executive Director and Board with real-time financial modeling and detailed variance analyses to guide strategic decisions.
- Audit & Compliance: Coordinate the annual audit process with external auditors. Ensure strict adherence to HUD and Maine DHHS reporting requirements.
- Capital Oversight: Manage organizational cash flow, forecasting, and asset management for our 27 residential properties.
2. Personnel & Operational Leadership
- Team Development: Hire, train, and mentor a professional accounting staff of three. Cultivate a culture of individual growth, professional excellence, and team cohesion.
- Policy Evolution: Review and improve the Finance Department’s policy manual, ensuring business practices evolve alongside shifting regulatory landscapes.
3. Executive Collaboration & Advocacy
- Board Liaison: Serve as the primary staff resource for the Board’s Finance Committee, translating complex financial data into actionable insights for diverse stakeholders.
- External Relations: Maintain productive relationships with state and federal funding sources (DHHS, HUD, etc.) and assist the Executive Director with community-based liaison work.
Finance Director Qualifications & Requirements
- Academic Foundation: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field (Master’s degree or CPA/CMA highly preferred).
- Leadership Experience: Significant financial leadership experience in a comparably sized organization ($15M–$30M range), ideally within the nonprofit or healthcare sectors.
- Technical Mastery: Proven expertise in GAAP/MAAP, nonprofit fund accounting, grant management, and complex audit preparation.
- Industry Expertise: Prior experience with MaineCare billing, DHHS contracts, and HUD funding is a significant advantage.
- Character Traits: Impeccable integrity, strong organizational skills, and a leadership style that balances collaborative decision-making with decisive action.
