SALT Tax Manager

Overview:

Company is seeking a State & Local Tax (SALT) Manager to oversee multi-state tax compliance, manage data-center-related tax exemptions, and transition key SALT activities from outsourced providers to in-house oversight. This role is ideal for someone with strong sales/use tax experience, property/incentive exposure, and the ability to support a growing operational footprint.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage state and local tax compliance across company’s operating footprint, including 8–10 monthly tax filings.
• Oversee all data-center-related tax exemptions; ensuring accurate, timely, and ongoing compliance.
• Lead the transition of exemption and SALT workflow from external consultants to internal processes, while continuing to manage advisors as needed.
• Monitor nexus, registration requirements, and filing obligations as company expands operations into new states.
• Support property tax matters, including coordination of valuations and exemption applicability for data center assets and equipment.
• Partner with Operations, Procurement, Accounting, and external advisors to evaluate taxability on equipment purchases, energy usage, and capital investments.
• Respond to state inquiries and manage SALT audits, documentation, and risk mitigation efforts.
• Research state tax legislation and recommend process improvements, incentives, or planning opportunities relevant to company’s data center operations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required; CPA preferred.
• 5–8 years of state and local tax experience, ideally with sales & use and incentive/exemption work.
• Experience with multi-state operations or asset-intensive industries (e.g., data centers, utilities, manufacturing) strongly preferred.
• Ability to work independently and build scalable processes in a fast-growing environment.
