Description
The School District of La Crosse is accepting applications from candidates for a 1.0 FTE Special Education Coordinator for the District beginning the 2026-2027 school year. Projected start date: July 1, 2026
The pay rate for the 260-day nonunion salary position is $102,472.
Director of Pupil Services & Special Education license is required.
The Coordinator of Special Education is a critical member of the special education leadership team who is charged with ensuring equity of services, opportunities and outcomes for students with disabilities. The Coordinator of Special Education will work collaboratively with the Director of Student Services, district administration, principals, special education and student support staff and teachers to plan, develop, implement and monitor educational programs to ensure the implementation of FAPE for students with disabilities. The Coordinator of Special Education is a leadership position that serves as a liaison between administration, school staff, students, families, and community agencies that support students. This position provides leadership relative to special education policies and procedures, as well as effective practices relative to models of intervention targeted toward struggling students.
KEY FUNCTIONS:
1. Provides structure, resources and supports to students, families and staff to ensure that all students have access FAPE in inclusive learning environments.
2. Administers the policies of the district related to special education services including ensuring the district’s compliance with all related state and federal statutes and regulations.
3. In collaboration with key stakeholders, develops, monitors, and supervises special education programming aimed at closing achievement and opportunity gaps for students with disabilities ages 3-21 and reducing disproportionate representation in special education.
4. Provide leadership and support to special education related services staff, assistive technology team, extended school year, private school equitable services and due process paperwork process.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Supports goals for Special Education that are tied to the district’s mission, vision, and strategic goals of increasing student achievement.
2. Assists school administration, special education and student support staff and school personnel with the supervision and coordination of special education instruction and with issues related to special education students and programs.
3. Works with the Director of Student Services to ensure that all students with a disability receive a free and appropriate education (FAPE).
4. Attends and acts as an LEA in all matters concerning special education students as needed.
5. Works with content coordinators, principals, special education coordinators and special education teachers to support the implementation of the district curriculum using appropriate modifications and/or accommodations so that students with disabilities are successful learners who are able to actively participate in appropriate grade level instruction.
6. Provides leadership for the supervision of IEP development and IEP team evaluations to ensure that legal requirements are met, eligibility guidelines are followed and that the program design is appropriate for individual students.
7. Assists in coordinating extended school year and summer school programming for special education students.
8. Supports the department in the provision of appropriate services to the private and parochial schools within the district.
9. Participates on district committees as needed as a building/district representative.
10. Assists in the preparation of reports to DPI, Principals, District Leadership and the Board of Education as requested.
11. Establishes and maintains partnerships with institutions of higher education and community organizations.
12. Follows a personal plan for professional development and actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally.
13. Advises and monitors special education and student services staff in the administration of student eligibility, placement, programming, dismissal, and follow-up in the area of special education.
14. Supervises and evaluates itinerant special education staff.
15. Build effective relationships among parents, school staff, other school districts, community service providers, and state agencies in the area of special education.
16. Manages the placement process for enrolling students with disabilities.
17. Assists Director of Student Services in coordinating specific projects, such as: review of IEPs, Extended School Year services, monitoring compliance with IDEA timelines, monitoring compliance with progress reporting, preparing and submitting federal and state reports and data requests.
18. Acts as a resource to teachers, administrators, and parents in brainstorming and offering solutions to problems.
19. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Services.
