Description
The School District of La Crosse is accepting applications for two 1.0 FTE District Behavior Support Specialists. This is a 189-day, nonunion position.
POSITION TITLE: District Behavior Support Specialist
ACCOUNTABILITY OBJECTIVES:
The District Behavior Support Specialist provides specialized support to schools and classrooms to stabilize students experiencing challenges that interfere with their ability to learn and thrive in educational settings. This role focuses on implementing interventions, promoting positive behavioral strategies, and fostering collaboration among school staff, students, and families to create inclusive and supportive environments.
POSITION CHARACTERISTICS:
  • Recruited by: Human Resources Director
  • Salary: Hourly rate/Salary based on qualifications
  • Level 1: Minimum education and experience. ($26.19/hr)
  • Level 2: At least 2 preferred qualifications in education, experience or professional licensure. ($31.29/hr)
  • Level 3: Masters degree, experience, and professional licensure. ($60,841 - Salary comparable to teacher MA 0/Step 1)
  • Length of Contract: Non-union, 189 day contract
POSITION RELATIONSHIPS:
  • Reports to: District Behavior Support Coordinator, Director of Community Services
  • Coordinates with: District Administrators, Building Principals, Student Services Staff, Classroom Teachers, Student Success Coaches, Interventionists, and Families
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Student Support:
  • Provide individualized support to students exhibiting challenging behaviors, emotional distress, or crises.
  • Assist in developing and implementing behavior intervention plans (BIPs).
  • Utilize de-escalation techniques and trauma-informed practices to promote student well-being.
  • Classroom Support:
  • Collaborate with teachers to implement strategies that support classroom management and student engagement.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe, inclusive, and conducive learning environment.
  • Model and coach evidence-based strategies for effective student support.
  • Coordinate classroom intervention efforts with other support personnel
  • Collaboration and Consultation:
  • Partner with school teams, including administration, student services personnel, student success coaches and instructional staff, to address student needs.
  • Contribute to fostering open communication and shared problem-solving with teams.
  • Guide and support school staff on implementing tiered interventions and support strategies.
  • Professional Development:
  • Facilitate training sessions for staff on behavior management, evidenced-based interventions, and best practices.
  • Stay current on best practices and research related to student behavior, mental health, PBIS, social-emotional learning and classroom interventions.
  • Data Collection and Reporting:
  • Monitor and document student progress and the effectiveness of interventions.
  • Assist in tracking data related to behavioral incidents and support services.
  • Provide regular updates to administration and contribute to the development of improvement strategies.
  • Crisis Intervention:
  • Respond to urgent situations, providing immediate support to stabilize students and mitigate disruptions.
  • Collaborate with school crisis teams to develop and implement action plans.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education: Associate’s degree and continuing education in social work, psychology, or a related field are required.
  • Experience: Minimum of 1 year of successful full-time experience working with youth in a school or community setting or in mental health, behavioral intervention, or related services.
B. Preferred Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in education, social work, psychology, or a related field.
  • Licensure: Professional licensures in teaching, student services, counseling, behavioral analysis, or related field.
  • Experience:
  • 3 years of successful full-time experience working with youth in a school or community setting or in mental health, behavioral intervention, or related services.
  • Successful experience developing and implementing individualized plans to support student needs.
  • Successful experience leading or supporting collaborative teams.

  • Proficiency in developing and implementing individualized plans to support student needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and be self-directed.

  • Professional, non-judgemental disposition with a work history of creating positive relationships and culture within an organization
  • Valid driver’s license and access to an automobile
