POSITION SUMMARY: The Middle School Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing specialized instruction and support services to students with disabilities in grades 6th - 8th. This position develops and implements Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), monitors student progress, collaborates with general education staff and families, and ensures compliance with federal, state, and district special education requirements. The Special Education Teacher fosters an inclusive learning environment that supports students' academic, behavioral, social, and emotional growth while helping them develop the skills necessary for success in school and beyond.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Instruction & Student Support
- Provide direct, individualized, and small-group instruction aligned to IEP goals
- Support students within general education classrooms through co-teaching or consultation
- Modify and adapt curriculum to meet diverse learning needs
- Implement behavior intervention plans as needed
- Support students in developing executive functioning and self-advocacy skills
- Develop, implement, and monitor IEPs in compliance with IDEA and state regulations
- Facilitate IEP meetings and maintain required documentation
- Monitor and report student progress toward IEP goals
- Participate in evaluation and re-evaluation processes
- Develop and implement transition plans beginning at age 15 (or as required by state law)
- Assist students in exploring career pathways, postsecondary education opportunities, independent living skills, and future employment goals.
- Collaborate with families, community agencies, and postsecondary organizations to support successful transitions beyond middle and high school.
- Collaborate with general education teachers and related service providers
- Participate in MTSS, IEP, and 504 meetings
- Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress
- Supervise and collaborate with paraprofessionals when assigned
- Maintain current licensure
- Participate in professional development
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and IDEA
- Support building and district improvement initiatives

- Bachelor's Degree in Special Education or related field preferred and will be given first consideration
- Currently hold a Colorado Special Education teaching license or have licensure application in process with appropriate endorsement in Special Education (Additional coursework required for eligibility toward a Colorado Teacher License is required or must be completed within an agreed-upon timeframe)
- Currently hold a Colorado Substitute Teaching License if Teacher License is not completed
- Knowledge of IEP development and compliance requirements
- Experience working with secondary students preferred
- Experience with functional curriculum and life skills instruction preferred
- CPI or crisis intervention training required
- Experience collaborating with related service providers
- Bilingual skills preferred
- Knowledge of IDEA and IEP compliance requirements
- Understanding of secondary curriculum and graduation requirements
- Skill in delivering differentiated and research-based interventions
- Ability to support transition planning and postsecondary readiness
- Strong data collection and progress monitoring skills
- Strong collaboration and communication skills
- Ability to manage timelines and multiple case management responsibilities
- Classroom setting
- Occasional evening events (parent conferences, school activities)
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with district policy and the Colorado Teacher Evaluation System.
