SY 26-27 Junior Information Security Specialist

PRIMARY FUNCTION:  

This position monitors and audits the District’s Information Technology systems to identify vulnerabilities,

and assists with addressing them.

REPORTS TO: Senior Director of Information Security and Technology Management

SALARY SCHEDULE: 107

WORK DAYS: 250

REQUIREMENTS:

        Education Level:

Required:

• High School diploma, or equivalent, with current enrollment in an Information Technology related degree program program.

• One (1) year of experience working in a hybrid network-computing environment.
• Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Preferred:

• Solid understanding of wireless vulnerabilities, WLAN-specific security threats, and software weaknesses, as well as mitigation strategies

Licenses, Certifications, and other Requirements

 Required:

 Preferred:

• Industry certification in information or cyber security.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• General knowledge of firewalls, intrusion detection systems, anti-virus software, data encryption, and other industry-standard techniques and practices.

• Working Knowledge of popular Windows PC software programs, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Internet Explorer, and so on.

• General knowledge of Windows, IOS, and Chrome OS.
• Working knowledge of security processes and procedures on LANs, WANs, servers, and data backups.

• Knowledge of applicable practices and laws relating to data privacy and protection.
• High level of analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Communication skills, including clarity, tact, courtesy, and calm during stressful situations.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written communications.
• Ability to work with principals, administrators, and other school personnel.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Monitors antivirus solutions to ensure district resources are running up to date definitions.
2. Monitors the network and provides early warning of abnormalities or issues.
3. Participates in compliance audits and assessments.
4. Analyzes potential vulnerabilities and threats to online data and systems.
5. Assists with conducting research on emerging products, services, protocols, and standards in support of security enhancement and development efforts.

1. Keeps current with emerging security alerts and issues.
2. Reviews audit logs of security software for anomalies.
3. Works with other departments to promote awareness and training on security protocols
4. Audits and queries data from workstations for optimized performance.
5. Assists in the creation of training and instructional materials.
6. Performs other duties as necessary for the effectiveness of the organization.

Incumbents will be considered “at will,” and appropriate pay will be determined based on the assigned pay grade and allowable experience.

Work Environment

Employees in this classification are normally exposed to a typical office environment. The employee has some control over the length of time sitting, standing, or ambulating.  There are occasions that require the lifting or pulling of equipment or supplies, as well as bending, stooping, or stretching. There is frequent use of computers, telephones, and other standard office equipment, which includes reading, listening, writing, or speaking.  There are few exceptional physical or sensory demands.
