Key Responsibilities
- Design and execute protein engineering strategies (rational design, semi-rational design, and directed evolution)
- Engineer enzymes for improved next generation DNA sequencing performance
- Develop and implement high-throughput screening and selection assays for enzyme variants
- Design and perform enzyme characterization studies using steady-state and pre-steady-state kinetics
- Apply transient-state kinetic methods (e.g., stopped-flow, rapid quench-flow) to resolve catalytic mechanisms and identify rate-limiting steps
- Characterize and compare enzyme mutants using kinetic, biochemical, and biophysical assays to guide engineering decisions
- Quantify enzyme performance metrics including catalytic efficiency (kcat, Km), incorporation rates, fidelity, processivity, and substrate specificity
- Collaborate cross-functionally with computational and assay development teams
- Troubleshoot and optimize protein expression, purification, and assay conditions
- Maintain detailed experimental records and contribute to intellectual property generation
Qualifications
- Deep expertise in enzyme engineering and molecular biology
- Strong foundation in enzyme kinetics, including Michaelis-Menten analysis and transient (pre-steady-state) kinetics
- Hands-on experience characterizing enzyme mutants and interpreting kinetic parameters to guide protein engineering
- Experience with kinetic instrumentation (e.g., stopped-flow, rapid quench-flow, fluorescence-based assays) is highly desirable
- Experience with polymerases or nucleic acid-interacting enzymes preferred
- Strong background in protein expression, purification, and biophysical characterization
- Familiarity with high-throughput screening methods and assay development
- Ability to connect enzyme behavior with system-level performance in sequencing or biochemical workflows
- Knowledge of sequencing technologies is a strong plus
- Strong problem-solving and experimental design skills
- Ability to work in fast-paced startup environments
Education & Industry Experience
- Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Protein Engineering, or related field
- 5 years of industry experience in protein engineering and enzymology
- Demonstrated experience in mechanistic enzymology and structure–function analysis of enzyme variants preferred
- Prior experience in NGS or sequencing technologies is a strong plus

California Pay Transparency Statement.
The anticipated salary range for this position is $105,000 – $135,000, depending on experience and qualifications. Final compensation will be determined based on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, location, relevant experience, skill set, and internal equity considerations.
