What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Design Engineer position at SAR Automation LP?
JOB SUMMARY
Design automation cells, retrofits, and system reconfigurations by developing detailed 2D drawings and 3D models, while creating comprehensive Bills of Materials (BOMs) for robots and auxiliary equipment. Provide technical automation engineering support to both internal teams and external customers, ensuring solutions meet performance, safety, and production requirements while supporting successful project execution from concept through implementation.
- Develop detailed 3D models of custom automation equipment, including robotic end-of-arm tooling and auxiliary material handling systems
- Modify and adapt existing library components for use in new or similar applications
- Create mechanical designs in compliance with applicable industry safety standards
- Produce detailed 2D drawings for automated production cells, auxiliary equipment, and individual manufacturing parts
- Process material data in the ERP system, including preparing and maintaining complete Bills of Materials (BOMs) for production orders
- Add new materials for custom components and update BOMs for delivered equipment as required
- Submit parts and equipment for procurement and purchasing activities
- Generate technical specifications to ensure compliance with SAR standards
- Participate in project activities such as kick-off meetings, design reviews, factory acceptance tests, training sessions, and other relevant meetings
- Create project documentation including layouts, spare parts lists, and wear item details
- Provide technical engineering support to internal teams across the organization
- Support project quoting efforts by developing mechanical labor and material cost estimates
- Assist Production Assembly and Integration teams with pre-assembly of new builds and
- retrofits prior to shipment
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams by providing documentation, clarification, and technical guidance to ensure efficient project workflow
- Perform additional duties, special projects, or assignments as directed by management
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Educational/Training Requirement:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
Experience:
- Minimum of four years of related experience in robotics or automation
- Preferred experience in mechanical design and custom machinery development
- Preferred software experience with SolidWorks, ERP systems, Teamcenter, and Microsoft Office
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of robotic and automation cell design, including linear and articulated robots, upstream and downstream equipment in the plastics industry, and relevant safety standards
- Strong communication skills to develop and maintain relationships both internally and externally, including interpreting and supplying technical information to customers and colleagues
- Detail-oriented with a focus on accurate documentation and maintaining high-quality standards
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Travel Requirements:
- Travel time per year: 5-10%
- Travel period: up to 2 weeks
- Travel to other countries is required
- Valid passport is required
Physical Requirements:
This role requires prolonged periods of sitting and computer work, including keyboarding for more than two hours at a time on a regular basis. There may be occasional exposure to mechanical equipment with potential safety hazards; PPE is required when on the factory floor as a preventive measure.
