Position Summary:
The Assistant Controller is responsible for financial reporting and accounting activities for three business entities / company divisions. This role assists in managing the accounting team to ensure work is properly allocated and completed accurately and on a timely basis.
The Assistant Controller is responsible for multiple accounting functions, including general ledger maintenance, financial reporting, month-end and year-end close processes, audit preparation, and special projects. The position requires strong analytical skills, technical accounting knowledge, and the ability to research and apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
This position continually monitors financial control processes and ensures accounting transactions are executed in accordance with GAAP and established internal control standards. The ideal candidate is a seasoned accounting professional with strong organizational and communication skills.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of the financial reporting framework and general ledger structure, ensuring accuracy and consistency in financial data and processes.
- Monitors and analyzes department work to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
- Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures relating to financial management and accounting.
- Ensure the accuracy of data and adherence of the system to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
- Prepare financial analysis statements, including monthly balance sheets, income statements, cash flows statements, and variance analysis comparing actual results to budget and prior year’s results
- Review of audited financial statements
- Uses experience and technical expertise to improve and streamline analysis, reporting, processes, and compliance systems.
- Provide functional advice or training to less experienced associates.
- Assists with annual financial statement audit, including audit schedule preparation and responding to audit inquiries.
- Work directly with all accounting and finance associates, as well as legal and other company functional department personnel.
- Other related duties as requested by management.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required.
- CPA designation required.
- Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience.
- Prior supervisory or team leadership experience required.
- Experience with real estate development and commercial accounting is a plus.
Skills & Abilities:
- Consolidation experience is a must.
- Excellent computer skills required - Excel is a must, JD Edwards and Yardi are a plus.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
- Experience with general ledger accounting, financial statement preparation, and audit support.
- Ability to research and apply technical accounting guidance.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet tight deadlines.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Ability to work 40 hour weeks with periodic evenings and weekends
