Teach the NC Notary Public and E-Notary classes on both campuses of Sandhills Community College.
The instructor is responsible for delivering instruction per lesson plans, administering the end of class tests, maintaining the class rosters, and communicating with the Secretary of State’s office on the successful completers.  
  • Deliver instruction using appropriate and various teaching methods.
  • Maintain and submit accurate academic records, including attendance rosters and grades.
  • Maintain appropriate professional relationships and demonstrate courtesy and respect toward students, including safeguarding confidentiality.
  • Support student success efforts.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to communications from students, and colleagues.
  • Support and promote the College’s mission and Core Values: respect, opportunity, helpfulness, integrity, and excellence.
  • Become familiar with and adhere to the Workforce Continuing Education Instructor Guide.
  • Meet periodically with the Director to discuss class schedules, course outlines, student progress, special needs, and required materials.

Required Education and Experience
  • Current commission as a North Carolina Notary Public in good standing. 
  • Current certification as a North Carolina Notary Public Instructor or eligibility to complete the certification process established by the North Carolina Department of the Secretary of State. 
  • Ability to meet and maintain all requirements necessary to teach North Carolina Notary Public and Electronic Notary courses. 
Requirements for Applicants Seeking North Carolina Notary Public Instructor Certification
An applicant who is not currently certified as a North Carolina Notary Public Instructor must be eligible for nomination by the College and must satisfy the certification requirements of the North Carolina Department of the Secretary of State. The applicant must provide evidence of performing at least one notarial act during each month of the 12 months immediately preceding the application for instructor certification. 
Evidence of the required notarial experience must be provided through one of the following three methods:
1. Journal as Evidence of Experience — 18 NCAC 07E .0204
The applicant may submit a journal of notarial acts that includes, at a minimum:
  • The dates on which notarial acts were performed; 
  • The type of each notarial act performed; and 
  • The name or names of the parties for whom each notarial act was performed. 
The applicant must also submit an affidavit verifying that the information contained in the journal is true and correct.
2. Employer Affidavit as Evidence of Experience — 18 NCAC 07E .0209
The applicant may submit an affidavit from an employer verifying the applicant’s experience performing notarial acts. The affidavit must include:
  • The name of the corporation, business, individual, or other entity employing the applicant; 
  • The full name and title of the individual verifying the applicant’s experience; 
  • The authority of that individual to verify the applicant’s experience; 
  • The individual’s address, telephone number, and email address, if applicable; 
  • A narrative description explaining why the applicant performed notarial acts as part of the applicant’s employment; and 
  • Verification that the applicant performed at least one notarial act during each of the immediately preceding 12 months. 
The employer affidavit may also serve as one of the applicant’s required recommendations when permitted by the North Carolina Department of the Secretary of State.
3. Alternative Evidence of Experience — 18 NCAC 07E .0212
The applicant may submit evidence other than a journal or employer affidavit, provided the evidence includes:
  • An affidavit from the applicant verifying that the applicant performed at least one notarial act during each of the immediately preceding 12 months; and 
  • An affidavit from at least one person who is not related to the applicant by birth, marriage, or adoption establishing that the applicant performed at least one notarial act during each of those 12 months. 
The applicant must also submit three standard letters of recommendation to the North Carolina Department of the Secretary of State from persons who are not related to the applicant by birth, marriage, or adoption. One recommendation may be provided by the College.
Once the Department of the Secretary of State verifies that the applicant meets all applicable requirements, the applicant will be placed on the waiting list for the next available Notary Public Instructor training class. Employment and assignment to teach Notary Public courses may be contingent upon successful completion of the certification process. 
Preferred education and experience:
  • Current North Carolina Notary Public Instructor certification. 
  • Current authorization or training necessary to teach Electronic Notary courses. 
  • Previous teaching or training experience.
