Under the direction of the Student, Family and Community Support Department, the Family Liaison supports and advocates families by enlisting family engagement in student academic success; by working with families in identifying and achieving academic goals; by accessing support services; by developing training opportunities and facilitating positive family, school and SFUSD relationships and communication. The Family Liaison creates authentic and diverse involvement opportunities for all families to contribute to their school community.

The Family Liaison Program Manager will provide ongoing support in conjunction with Principals or Assistant Principals. Someone who is Bilingual and biliterate in Spanish, Chinese, Tagalog or Samoan. Candidates should have a college level education or equivalent work experience.

The Family Liaison develops and implements a comprehensive program to increase and improve family involvement in support of student education. The Family Liaison works to enlist and engage culturally and linguistically diverse family groups in program activities with a primary focus on historically underrepresented communities.


Essential Duties

The duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to the job code/class and are not intended to be an inclusive or exhaustive list.


As the Family Liaison (R20), you will:


  • Help the school community develop a family-friendly school climate amongst staff, students and families. Develop programs and activities designed to engage families in improving student achievement.
  • Support staff and families to develop strong academic partnerships.
  • Enhance communication between families, school and the district.
  • Develop and implement effective family involvement strategies to empower families as key decision makers in school governance committees such as: School Site Council & English Learner Advisory Council.
  • Coordinate and support the school’s wide governance council and committees.
  • Promote and participate in school/ district activities and programs for families.
  • Recruit partners to become part of the school’s family involvement program.
  • Organize, implement, coordinate and present family education workshops and training sessions.
  • Prepare and disseminate newsletters and other school communication materials for school communities.
  • Develop volunteer activities at school site, including coordinating family leaders, room parents, volunteers, etc.
  • Collect and evaluate the data of family involvement activities.
  • Provide support resources and referrals to families as needed.
  • Prepare monthly family engagement plans and maintain records on program activities.
  • Maintain monthly Data Director log with focal families at school site.
  • Attend monthly professional development sessions which are organized and led by central office.
  • Report monthly activities and goals to school staff and community partners.

  • Strong analytics and systems thinking necessary to interpret data to inform goals and strategy, as well as build infrastructure where none exists
  • Ability to work effectively across multiple functions and roles within a complex organization
  • A proven record of effectively planning, organizing and using resources to take action and achieve goals
  • The ability to learn quickly and adapt as needed in a fast-paced environment
  • Outstanding organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail
  • A flexible, “can do” work ethic with a focus on identifying challenges and proactively working to find solutions while maintaining a bigger picture lens and focus on what can be delivered instead of what cannot be done
  • Excellent data analysis skills and experience synthesizing data to drive action steps
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with senior level district staff and colleagues
  • Effective written and verbal communication and the ability to clearly communicate complex, bureaucratic processes to a variety of audiences
  • Ability to define and implement effective HR business practices
  • Ability to work effectively in difficult situations that involve confidential and sensitive matters
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and GSuite (Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, Forms)


Knowledge, Abilities and Skills


  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with staff and the community in a multi-ethnic educational environment.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with school staff, parents and the public. 3. Demonstrate computer literacy.
  • Prepare accurate, concise data and materials.
  • Read, understand and apply a variety of district policies, rules and regulations.
  • Act quickly and with mature judgement.
  • De-escalated conflict amongst students, staff and families.
  • Meet deadlines of work assignment schedules.
  • Interact daily with members of school staff and parents and possess comfortable interpersonal skills and cooperative attitudes.
  • Consistent attendance is required.
  • Convey an understanding, patient attitude toward other staff, students and parents. 12. Maintain the privacy of confidential information.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Language Competency in Spanish (Proctored Bilingual Exam conducted by SFUSD Required)
  • Four (4) years of college-level coursework. (30 semester units or 45 quarter units equal one year); and
  • Two (2) years of verifiable experience (one year = 285 hours) of paid or volunteer work in the community with culturally, ethnically and socio-economically diverse population of parents of public-school students. Such experience should include programing or activities planning and coordination and parent education.
