Regardless of job title, every employee at SDCOE has a hand in helping local students learn. The SDCOE is recruiting to add to the substitute pool of Classroom Assistant-Alternative Education. Under the general supervision of a school administrator, the Classroom Assistant assists in providing instructional support to individual or small groups of students in assigned subject-matter areas to reinforce classroom lessons in the classroom of a juvenile court or community school; assist a classroom teacher in the supervision of individual or groups of students and perform a variety of related duties in the maintenance of an effective learning environment.

This position is not eligible for benefits.


This position requires possession of a high school diploma or equivalent, completion of at least 48 semester units earned at an accredited college or university or an Associate of Arts degree (including college-level course work in general academic subject areas such as math, science, and English), and one year of experience preferred (paid or volunteer), working with youth in an organized setting (ideally with at-risk youth).

Additionally, the paraprofessional requirements of ESSA (also known as NCLB Act) must be met, which can be satisfied by one of the following:

  • Completion of at least 48 semester units at an institution of higher education;
  • Obtained an associate’s (or higher) degree;
  • Met a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate, through a formal State or local academic assessment, knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing, reading (or readiness), writing (or readiness), and mathematics (or readiness).

It is important to note to become a substitute/limited-term employee, there will be a fingerprinting requirement that currently costs up to $80 (this is an up-front, out-of-pocket cost) if processed using SDCOE fingerprinting services. In addition, if you apply and are selected for a permanent position at any point there would be an additional cost up to $80 (currently) for fingerprinting as a permanent employee (taken out of your first regular paycheck). Fingerprints can be paid in the form of a money order, cashier's check, or debit/credit card. If paid by card, you may incur a card processing fee.
