Job Summary
The San Diego County Office of Education is recruiting for a Special Education Teacher for Friendship School within the Student Services and Programs division. The Special Education Teacher - Friendship School advances SDCOE’s commitment to increasing belonging and reducing barriers to opportunity by providing specialized, individualized educational instruction and support services to students ages 3 through 22 with extensive support needs. The Special Education Teacher designs and implements standards-based, functional, and developmentally appropriate learning experiences that promote each student’s academic, communication, social-emotional, adaptive, and life skills growth. In collaboration with related service providers, nursing staff, families, and multidisciplinary teams, the Special Education Teacher ensures a safe, inclusive, and responsive learning environment that supports student access, participation, and progress in accordance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), applicable laws, and best practices. ABOUT FRIENDSHIP SCHOOL Friendship School is a special education school operated by the San Diego County Office of Education. The school, located in Imperial Beach, serves students, ages 3-22 years, who have multiple, severe disabilities with health impairments. Friendship School is staffed by a credentialed teachers, student attendants and staff that are continually trained on specialized healthcare procedures.
Requirements / Qualifications
This position requires:
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education or related field preferred
- Prior experience in supervising and/or teaching students with extensive medical and support needs is preferred
Certificates, Licenses, Credentials:
- Education Specialist Credential in Extensive Support Needs (ESN) or equivalent document
- CLAD or equivalent English Learner authorization
- Valid CPR and First Aid certification
- Early Childhood Special Education certificate and Orthopedic Impairments added authorization preferred
Applicants must have experience in the development and writing of Individualized Education Plans (IEP), assessment procedures, and adherence to federal and state regulations; knowledge of affective and cognitive areas, fine motor development, communication behavior management, academic development, including a variety of strategies for teaching students who have multiple disabilities/orthopedic impairments and medical needs; an understanding of emotional problems of students and parents of students affected with the most significant disabilities; and basic knowledge of specialized health care needs; specialized equipment, such as wheelchairs, braces and adaptive devices; and assistive technology.
To be considered for this position, you must individually attach the following items to your completed EDJOIN Application:
- Resume, detailing education and experience
- Two (2) current Letters of Recommendation (dated within the last year preferably from current/former supervisors)
- Copy of valid credential with appropriate authorization as issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing***
- Proof of CLAD Certification/English Learner Authorization if not embedded in your credential
- Unofficial Transcripts verifying Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field (preferred)
- Valid CPR/First Aid Certification
- Eligibility for Intern Credential letter if applicable
- Any documentation of preferred certifications or added authorizations
*** We are also accepting applications for those candidates who are eligible to receive an internship credential as issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. To be considered for this option, please obtain and attach an Eligibility for Intern Credential letter (addressed to The San Diego County Office of Education) as issued by your university.
