What are the responsibilities and job description for the Police Chaplain position at San Diego County Office of Education?
The Position
The Police Chaplain will be there for the police department employees in times of spiritual need and will be a departmental resource with whom the police employee and/or his/her family can confide and rely upon to listen to their problems with empathy, understanding and confidentiality. The Police Chaplain will not judge, but will listen, provide the assistance that he or she is able to provide, or refer to other appropriate professionals.
Duties
Provide for the spiritual and physical welfare of seriously injured or seriously ill police personnel or their family in the hospital or at home through liaison with a hospital Chaplain or similar resources.
Respond to the scene or hospital as directed upon the death, serious injury or serious illness of an employee.
Assist department officials, if requested, in notifying the family of an employee who has been killed or seriously injured.
Respond to disaster scenes.
Attend and participate in funerals of employees as directed or requested.
Attend department functions and ceremonies, as requested, to make invocations or perform similar functions.
Attend roll call or ride along with personnel to develop and expand the Chaplain’s role in the organization.
Conduct local training of recruits and in-service training as requested.
Participate in training courses to enhance his/her effectiveness.
Counsel employees with personal problems as requested.
Maintain liaison with the City’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) where appropriate in counseling employees.
Maintain liaison with, and assist, the Critical Incident Peer Support Team as requested.
Provide liaison with other religious leaders within the community.
