Summary

The San Diego Archaeological Center is seeking a creative and driven Marketing Coordinator to expand the reach and impact of the Center’s mission, programs, and community engagement efforts. Working within a collaborative, small-team environment, this position helps shape how the Center connects with the public through multi-channel storytelling across social media, email, and visual content. This role is an ideal opportunity for a self-starter who enjoys hands-on creative work, values attention to detail, and is passionate about connecting diverse audiences to San Diego’s cultural heritage.


Essential functions and responsibilities

Prioritization will focus on social media, email communications, and visual content creation with other responsibilities supporting broader marketing and organizational needs.

  • Maintain the Center’s Instagram, Facebook, and other social media platforms, including developing, scheduling, and publishing content
  • Create marketing emails and the quarterly e-newsletter using the Center’s CRM software
  • Design print and digital marketing materials (flyers, signage, event graphics, etc.) to support marketing needs across departments in alignment with the Center’s brand
  • Capture and edit photo and video content from programs, events, and exhibits for use across marketing channels
  • Assist with writing, editing, and proofreading marketing content
  • Help track basic performance metrics and contribute ideas for improvement
  • Maintain and organize the digital media library
  • Provide additional staff support for events and public programs as needed

  • Knowledge and love of archaeology is a plus. Desire to learn more about archaeology is a must.


Work environment

  • Primarily indoor office, lab, and museum spaces
  • Occasional outdoor work during programs and events
  • Exposure to natural surroundings, including plants and wildlife


Physical demands

  • Ability to sit at a desk and work on a computer for extended periods of time
  • Ability to assist with maintaining a clean and welcoming workplace environment, including dusting, mopping, vacuuming, and light basic outdoor upkeep, as part of team responsibilities. Requires intermittent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, and lifting up to 15 pounds unassisted.


Required experience and skills

  • 1-3 years of hands-on experience managing Facebook and Instagram, including content creation, scheduling, and basic analytics, for an organization or brand
  • Demonstrated proficiency in photography, videography, and graphic design
  • Excellent writing and editorial skills


Preferred education, experience, and skills

In addition to the required education and experience, a successful candidate will also possess the majority of items below.

  • Degree or certificate in Marketing, Communications, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office
  • Familiarity with email marketing and CRM platforms
  • Experience with Tribal engagement and collaboration
  • Experience in archaeology, cultural institutions, or other scientific fields


Additional valuable experience and skills

  • Basic knowledge of digital advertising best practices
  • Non-profit experience
  • Spanish language proficiency


Other position details

  • Part-time, 14-18 hours/week
  • Flexible schedule Tuesday – Saturday, onsite
  • Compensation: $21-24/hr; Paid sick leave
  • Live Scan background check required
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • This position is not available for work authorization
