Position Summary
Samuels Seafood Company is seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Purchasing Agent / Buyer to support our growing operations. This role is responsible for sourcing high-quality seafood products, negotiating competitive pricing, and maintaining strong supplier relationships in a fast-paced, global marketplace.
Key Responsibilities
- Negotiate with suppliers to secure the best pricing, terms, and product availability
- Monitor and analyze global seafood market trends to support purchasing decisions
- Execute regular and large-scale commodity purchases based on sales flow and market conditions
- Identify and introduce new products and suppliers to internal sales teams
- Maintain strong attention to product quality, specifications, and consistency
- Secure and evaluate supplier quotations; lead negotiations on pricing and terms
- Collaborate cross-functionally with sales and senior management
- Attend industry trade shows and supplier events as needed
- Support inventory control, sourcing strategies, and supply chain efficiency
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of purchasing experience (seafood or food industry preferred)
- Experience working in an import/export environment
- Proven ability to collaborate with senior management
- Background in large-scale commodity purchasing
- Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills
- Demonstrated negotiation and influencing abilities
- Experience with inventory control and sourcing
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and general internet tools
- Ability to safely operate warehouse equipment such as hand trucks and forklifts
Education Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required
Work Environment
- Office Setting: Standard business environment (70–72°F)
- Distribution Center (up to 30% of time): Cold, wet, and refrigerated conditions (as low as below freezing; typically around 37°F)
Physical Requirements
- Ability to walk on cold, wet concrete floors (25–30% of the workday)
- Strong hearing ability (90%) to detect equipment signals, alarms, and vehicle movement
- Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs regularly and up to 100 lbs occasionally
