Position Overview
The Grant Writer plays a critical role in advancing the mission of a peer-run, peer-led Recovery Community Organization dedicated to supporting individuals impacted by substance use disorder (SUD). This position is responsible for researching, writing, and managing grant proposals that fund recovery support services, including recovery coaching, peer support, housing, harm reduction, and wraparound services.
This role requires a deep understanding of recovery principles, including multiple pathways to recovery, trauma-informed care, and the value of lived experience in service delivery. The ideal candidate will be passionate about reducing stigma and expanding access to recovery resources.
Key Responsibilities
Grant Research & Development
- Identify and research funding opportunities from federal, state, local, and private sources (including foundations and corporate giving programs).
- Maintain a grant calendar with deadlines, requirements, and reporting schedules.
- Align funding opportunities with organizational priorities and program needs.
Proposal Writing & Submission
- Write compelling, clear, and data-driven grant proposals, letters of intent (LOIs), and funding applications.
- Translate program outcomes, participant stories, and impact data into persuasive narratives.
- Collaborate with leadership and program staff to gather necessary information for proposals.
- Ensure timely and accurate submission of all grant materials.
Program Collaboration & Storytelling
- Work closely with recovery coaches, leadership, and program teams to understand services such as:
- Drop-in centers
- Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)
- Recovery housing
- Peer recovery coaching
- Community outreach and harm reduction
- Incorporate real-life recovery stories (while maintaining confidentiality) to demonstrate impact.
Grant Management & Reporting
- Track awarded grants and ensure compliance with all requirements.
- Prepare and submit grant reports, including outcome data and financial summaries.
- Maintain accurate records of submissions, awards, and reporting deadlines.
Data & Impact Tracking
- Collaborate with staff to gather metrics such as:
- Participant engagement (sign-ins, services utilized)
- Recovery outcomes
- Community impact (events, outreach, housing placements)
- Use data to strengthen future proposals and demonstrate program effectiveness.
Qualifications
Required
- Proven experience in grant writing, fundraising, or nonprofit development.
- Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills.
- Ability to translate complex program data into compelling narratives.
- Understanding of or willingness to learn about substance use disorder and recovery models.
Preferred
- Experience working with or within a Recovery Community Organization (RCO) or behavioral health setting.
- Familiarity with peer support models and lived experience recovery principles.
- Knowledge of funding streams related to SUD, mental health, reentry, and housing.
- Experience with grant management systems or donor databases.
