Your role with us
Are you passionate about creating meaningful experiences for volunteers and making a lasting impact on patient care? Salem Health is seeking a Manager of Volunteer Services to lead one of the most dynamic and community-driven programs in our organization; a program that transforms the lives of patients, families, and volunteers alike. This role is at the heart of connecting hundreds of volunteers—including high school and college students, retirees, and pet therapy teams—with opportunities that enhance patient, visitor, and employee experiences.
As the leader of Volunteer Services, you will oversee a team of dedicated staff and a network of more than 500 volunteers who provide comfort, care, and connection across our hospitals and clinics. You will collaborate closely with clinical and operational leaders to identify roles that add value, innovate programs that meet evolving needs, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards. From managing beloved initiatives like Pet Therapy, Food Pharmacy, and No One Dies Alone, to supporting community outreach and recognition events, this position offers variety, purpose, and the ability to guide the future of volunteer engagement at Salem Health.
This is more than a leadership role; it’s an opportunity to shape meaningful experiences that enhance patient care and strengthen our community.
What you'll do
- Lead and Innovate Volunteer Programs: Develop, implement, and continuously evaluate programs that engage volunteers and meet patient and organizational needs.
- Recruit, Screen, and Match Volunteers: Ensure a robust pipeline of volunteers through effective recruitment strategies, interviews, and role matching that aligns with skills and interests.
- Manage Volunteer Services Team: Supervise a small but mighty team, providing coaching, performance reviews, and support for professional growth.
- Collaborate Across Departments: Partner with clinical leaders, Nutrition Services, Emergency Department, and other teams to identify volunteer opportunities and ensure seamless integration into patient care.
- Ensure Compliance and Safety: Oversee onboarding, background checks, vaccine verification, and annual education to meet Joint Commission and organizational standards.
- Drive Recognition and Engagement: Coordinate volunteer council activities, recognition events, and newsletters to foster community and appreciation.
- Support Strategic Initiatives: Work with the Salem Hospital Auxiliary and Human Resources leadership team on workforce development programs, including job shadowing and career exploration.
- Manage Budgets and Grants: Oversee program budgets and collaborate with the foundation to secure funding for initiatives like the Clothing Closet and Diaper Depot.
What we're looking for
- Experience managing volunteer programs and/or coordinating large-scale community events.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work with diverse populations from teens to retirees.
- High emotional intelligence and diplomacy for handling sensitive conversations.
- Detail-oriented with ability to manage regulatory requirements and documentation.
- Impeccable writing and presentation skills.
- Creative and innovative mindset to develop new programs and adapt existing ones.
- Collaborative and team-oriented; this is not a role for someone who prefers to work alone.
- Flexible and adaptable to changing needs and schedules.
- Comfortable with problem-solving and quick decision-making in dynamic situations.
Required qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Minimum three years in recruitment, selection, and supervision of volunteers or paid workforce.
Additional information
The strongest candidates will demonstrate:
- Experience writing grants or working with foundations.
- Background in nonprofit leadership or event coordination.
