The State of New Hampshire, Department of Safety, Division of State Police – Marine Patrol has a full-time vacancy for a Marine Patrol Officer II (33-3050 POLICE OFFICERS-P4). 

Summary:

Enforces criminal, boating, and related laws pursuant to RSA 270:12-a in support of public safety, protection of property, and preservation of order on New Hampshire’s inland and coastal waters. Deters and responds to criminal activity, conducting patrols, apprehending violators, investigating incidents, assisting in prosecutorial efforts, and providing physical security for critical infrastructure, ports, and vessels along the state’s seacoast.

YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS: Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education. 


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience: Associate’s degree OR equivalent combination of 2 years of education and experience after high school. Experience must be as a certified police officer (full-time certified) or honorable active-duty military.

License/Certification: Valid driver’s license

Other Requirements:

1. Age/Citizenship: Must be at least 21 years of age and a U.S. citizen on date of examination

2. Eyesight and Hearing: Must have at least 20/100 in each eye uncorrected and corrected to 20/40 (near vision) and 20/30 (distant vision) in each eye and have normal uncorrected depth and color perception; must possess normal hearing sufficient to enable performance of essential job functions.

3. Examinations:

a. Must pass a physical agility test designed to measure ability to perform essential job functions

b. Must pass a 50-yard free style swim test or have a current certificate of swimming ability containing this requirement

c. Must pass a written examination and structured interview

d. Must pass a comprehensive background investigation including a fingerprint-based criminal background check and motor vehicle record check, polygraph examination and psychological examination

e. Must pass a comprehensive medical examination, provided at the State’s expense and performed by a physician selected by the NH Division of State Police, indicating no physical conditions exist prohibiting the performance of essential job functions

f. Must pass unannounced drug testing

4. Must be willing to accept employment anywhere in the State of New Hampshire

AFTER-HIRE REQUIREMENTS:

1. NH full-time police officer certification within the time frame established by the NH Police Standards and Training Council and maintain throughout employment

2. Valid New Hampshire Boating Education Certificate by completion of initial field training

3. Certification in emergency first aid by completion of initial field training and maintain throughout employment

Responsibilities:

Conducts regular patrols on inland and coastal waterways to enforce federal and state boating regulations, state criminal laws, and navigation rules. Provides a visible deterrent to unsafe or unlawful behavior and promotes voluntary compliance through education and enforcement.

Responds to boating accidents, criminal activity, and public service calls. Investigates complaints and documents findings in a thorough and professional manner.

Conducts security checks of key maritime infrastructure, including ports, bridges, terminals, and waterfront facilities. Participates in the escort and protection of sensitive military or civilian vessels while in transit.

Effects lawful arrests, including the use of physical force or restraint when necessary. Employs approved defensive tactics, including verbal de-escalation, in accordance with training and departmental policy.

Operates law enforcement vehicles and patrol boats in diverse and often hazardous conditions, including inclement weather, reduced visibility, congested waters, and high-speed pursuits. Achieves and maintains proficiency in operating all classes of Marine Patrol vessels, including Ambars, field patrol boats, personal watercraft (PWCs), and larger inland and coastal patrol vessels. Maintains operational readiness of assigned equipment.

Prepares thorough and accurate investigative reports, citations, affidavits, warrants, and case-related sketches. Ensures documentation is legally sufficient and clearly communicates findings for judicial proceedings.

Prosecutes criminal cases in District Court and testifies as a witness when necessary.

Inspects private and commercial vessels to verify compliance with federal and state safety, registration, and equipment standards. Educates boaters on relevant laws and safe boating practices. Administers practical examinations for Commercial Boat Operators of certain passenger-carrying vessels in accordance with state regulations.

Responds to water-based emergencies including distress calls, medical incidents, and search-and-rescue operations. Administers first aid and coordinates with emergency services as necessary.

Inspects and verifies proper placement and functioning of navigational aids such as spar buoys and flashing beacons. Reports discrepancies and coordinates with appropriate personnel for correction.

Conducts investigations of complaints of aquatherm regulations during the winter season to ensure adherence and public safety in accordance with RSA 270:30-35.
