What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sac Zoo Summer Camp - Troop Lead position at Sacramento Zoo?
Are you ready to lead the way? The Troop Lead is a vital part of our summer camp team, serving as the "anchor" for a specific group of campers. You are the consistent face of your class, guiding them through their daily adventures from one Base Camp, an indoor or outdoor dedicated space where specialty classes are held, to the next. While you will collaborate with different expert teachers throughout the week, you remain the primary leader for your "troop," ensuring a seamless and high-energy experience for every child.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Act as the primary leader for a specific class, moving with them to different Base Camps and teachers to maintain group cohesion.
- Assist in providing age-appropriate instruction to children ages 5–13.
- Maintain excellent classroom management in all environments, including zoo grounds, classrooms, and during special presentations.
- Take the reins as the lead instructor for at least one scheduled activity during the week.
- Supervise, mentor, and evaluate teen Camp Counselors assigned to your troop.
- Supervise campers across zoo grounds and independently manage the group at various times during the camp day.
- Act as the bridge between your class and the teachers regarding behavior issues, successes, and logistical needs.
Qualifications
- Must be 18 and able to pass a background check.
- Minimum 1 year experience working with children; previous summer camp experience is a plus.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask and manage time independently.
- Ability to learn quickly and adapt to different teaching styles as you move between base camps.
- Must be available for the mandatory training on May 17th.
- Available to work between one and nine weeks (June–August).
- Ability to work outdoors for long periods in various conditions, including extreme heat.
- Able to lift and carry 50 pounds.
- Ability to traverse zoo grounds quickly and without assistance.
Pay: $17.00 - $17.50 per hour
