Our camp counselors provide engaging educational experiences to the children of the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary’s camp programs. If you enjoy education, participating in crafts and kids’ activities, spending ample time outdoors, working around animals, and can supervise children under the direction of the Camp Director – then we are eager to have you on our team!
Description: Under the direct supervision of the Camp Director, camp counselors assist with youth camps at the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary by supervising campers and supporting daily activities. Counselors help lead games, crafts, and educational programs while ensuring a safe, positive environment and fostering curiosity and respect for wildlife and rescued animals.
Pay & Benefits:
- $16.90 per hour
- Non-exempt, hourly, part-time
- Part-time positions are hourly and not eligible for benefits and are limited to working 999 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). No full-time regular appointment will be made from this class.
- Note: Unfortunately, current active CalPERS members are ineligible for employment with part-time positions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Under the direction of the Camp Director and Senior Program Coordinator, actively participate in and direct animal related camp activities for groups of no more than 25 campers.
- Supervise children under the direction of the Camp Director.
- Assist and plan group games, arts and crafts, and educational activities.
- Ensure a fun, educational, and safe environment for campers.
- Respond to visitor questions and educate visitors about the animals.
- Must be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability, and good communication skills.
Experience: Previous experience working with children and knowledge of a variety of youth activities is desirable. Experience with animals is also desirable. High school diploma or equivalent. Must be at least 18 years of age.
Certificates/Licenses: Current standard First Aid and CPR Certification and California Driver’s License preferred.
Schedule
We align our camp programs with the Folsom Cordova Unified School District calendar.
Hours
- Summer: 7:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. (Camp: 8:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.)
- Spring/Fall: 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. (Camp: 10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.)
Camp Dates
- Shifts range from 6–8 hours, Monday–Friday
- Spring Camp: April 6–10 (Camp: 10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.), ages 8–11
- Summer Camp:
- 8 total weeks (6 weeks Junior Camp, ages 8–11; 2 weeks Senior Camp, ages 12–15)
- Runs June 1–July 29, with a break the week of June 29
- Camp hours: 8:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.
Physical Requirements
Work is performed in a typical outdoor environment on a year-round basis. (1) Mobility: frequent performance of manual labor, frequent standing, walking, or driving; frequent climbing, reaching, bending, stooping, crawling, and squatting. (2) Lifting: frequent lifting up to 25 pounds; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. (3) Vision: constant use of overall vision. (4) Dexterity: frequent grasping, holding, reaching, hand/shoulder/elbow movements. (5) Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking in person. (6) Emotional/Psychological: frequent coworker and public contact; frequent working alone and independent. (7) Environment: frequent exposure to outside elements (sun, wind, rain).
Additional Information: Outside of seasonal camps, camp counselors can assist with the zoo sanctuary’s Guest Services team, working in our ticket booth, concessions, gift shop, and helping with events. More information can be provided if interested.
