Director of Nursing Services - ASC

Note: This is a retained, confidential search for an established, multi-specialty ambulatory surgery center (ASC).

About the Organization
We are conducting a confidential search for an experienced Director of Nursing to direct all clinical operations at a premier outpatient surgical center in the northern NYC metropolitan area. The facility runs high-volume, multi-specialty elective procedures and maintains strict accreditation standards.

The Role
You hold total clinical and operational accountability for pre-operative, intra-operative (OR), post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), and sterile processing (CSSD) departments. You lead the nursing and technical staff, drive surgical turnover efficiencies, and ensure flawless compliance with state DOH and AAAHC or Joint Commission standards.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Quality and Patient Safety

• Maintain a zero-patient-harm culture across all perioperative phases.
• Direct infection control, surgical site infection (SSI) tracking, and environment of care protocols.
• Partner with the Medical Director and Anesthesia Chief on clinical policies and emergency response drills.
• Lead the facility through unannounced state DOH and national accreditation surveys.

Staff Leadership and Workforce Management

• Direct, mentor, and evaluate charge nurses, OR/PACU RNs, surgical technicians, and sterile processing staff.
• Optimize daily block-time staffing ratios, room turnover metrics, and overtime controls.
• Conduct competency validations, skills check-offs, and clinical onboarding.
• Resolve staff grievances and floor bottlenecks proactively.

Perioperative and Physician Operations

• Coordinate patient flow from intake and pre-op clearance through PACU discharge.
• Collaborate with independent surgeons and anesthesiologists to support complex case requirements.
• Manage specialized surgical equipment, instrument inventory, and vendor consignment tracking.
• Oversee medication reconciliation, narcotic logs, and high-alert medication safety.

Departmental and Financial Stewardship

• Manage the clinical labor and medical-surgical supply budget.
• Partner with the facility Administrator on capital equipment purchasing and case-mix expansion.
• Ensure accurate documentation in the electronic health record and surgical management system.

Qualifications and Requirements

Education and Licensing

• Required: Active, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of New York.
• Required: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
• Preferred: Master’s degree (MSN or MHA); CNOR or CAPA certification.

Experience Requirements

• Required: Minimum of 5–7 years of total clinical Registered Nurse (RN) experience.
• Required: Minimum of 3–5 years in a dedicated clinical leadership role (DON, Clinical Manager, or OR Director) within an ambulatory surgery center (ASC)
• Required Track Record: Direct, verifiable leadership through AAAHC, Joint Commission, or state DOH survey inspections with zero conditional/critical deficiencies
