Position Summary
SummerWorks cubs lead counselors provide leadership for our youngest campers (ages 4–5) and their counselor teams, creating a safe, joyful, and inclusive camp environment. They guide campers in developing social-emotional skills, independence, and cooperation, while modeling positive behavior and problem-solving. Lead counselors mentor and support counselors, contribute to program quality, and ensure smooth daily transitions. Ideal candidates are enthusiastic, organized, and creative leaders who bring energy, patience, and a positive, collaborative spirit to every day, stepping in wherever campers or staff need guidance.
Primary Job Responsibilities
Staff training
- Play an active role in pre-camp staff training and weekly staff meetings, both in planning and execution
- Build strong team dynamics and facilitate daily age group check-ins
Staff supervision
- Provide daily support to the cubs counselor team
- Serve as a first point of contact for staff questions and minor concerns
- Mentor staff and model professionalism, positivity, and appropriate boundaries
- Promote staff morale through encouragement, recognition, and open communication
- Communicate staff needs, concerns, and observations to the cubs director promptly and professionally (within 24 hours)
Activity Planning & Co-Facilitation
- Plan and implement daily activities alongside counselors, modeling best practices and providing in-the-moment support
- Assist in creating weekly age-group plans
- Support daily check-in/check-out routines, morning announcements, den time, and Friday Finale activities
- Oversee transitions, including field trips, snack time, and downtime
- Set up, maintain, and clean activity spaces
- Other duties as assigned
Family Communication
- Communicate with families at check-in/check-out regarding daily updates, minor illnesses or injuries, behavior notes, and positive highlights
- Build positive, welcoming relationships with families through consistent, friendly communication
- Refer complex, sensitive, or ongoing concerns to the cubs director
- Be available to support conversations with families alongside counselors or the cubs director
Administrative tasks
- Maintain working knowledge of all camper and schedule information for their assigned age group
- Serve as the primary point of contact for counselors when camper or schedule information needs clarification
- Communicate relevant information to counselors to support daily supervision and programming
- Implement assigned den groupings, schedules, staff assignments, and break schedules as provided
Camper support
- Maintain awareness of camper behavior issues and group dynamics within the cubs group
- Support counselors in explaining and reinforcing SummerWorks expectations and safety rules to campers
- Serve as the first line of support for counselors managing day-to-day camper behavior
- Assist with de-escalation and redirection of camper behavior as needed
- Respond to emergencies calmly and professionally and notify the cubs director immediately
Field trip management
- Communicate field trip logistics to cubs director and counselors
- Assist with preparing and organizing necessary field trip materials (camp t-shirts, first aid kits, water bottles, snacks, forms, medications, charged phones, and name tags)
- Review bus and field trip expectations with counselors and campers
- Support timely departure and return by following established procedures and schedules
- Assist with camper supervision and transitions before, during, and after the field trip
Skills and Requirements
- College degree preferred; diverse backgrounds and experiences are valued
- 1-2 years of experience working with young children
- CPR certification required (training provided)
- Experience working in a camp or daycare setting
- A passion for education and child development
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and manage multiple administrative responsibilities in a fast-paced environment

- Work comfortably and effectively in outdoor environments, including direct sunlight and varying temperatures.
- Supervise water activities, including active participation in the water to actively support and monitor campers
- Move easily around classrooms, the Rowland Hall McCarthey campus, and off-site locations for field trips to support various activities
- Contribute in an organized and productive manner as a team member of the SummerWorks program
- Lift up to 10 lbs of boxes to prepare/clean up from activities
- Communicate appropriately and effectively with constituents, including campers, families, and colleagues
Additional Information
This is a seasonal, non-exempt position. The hourly rate ranges between $17.50 and $18.50 per hour, based on experience. SummerWorks has mandatory paid staff training on June 4, 5, and 6, 2026. Our camp season begins on Monday, June 8, 2026, and ends on Friday, August 7, 2026; camp staff work 8:10 am–4 pm daily. Leadership staff may start before June 4. There will be no camp on June 19, July 3, and July 24. CPR and first aid certification is required. SummerWorks offers CPR and first aid training prior to the start of camp.
