Position Summary

Horizons at Rowland Hall is a summer camp initiative designed to support public school students in Title I schools in mitigating their summer learning loss. Teachers within the Horizons at Rowland Hall program will work directly with students on instruction in literacy and math during the 6-week summer camp, running from June 8 - July 17, 2026. Interns will support the lead teacher and teaching assistant with all classroom instruction and activities.  Interns will also accompany students on field trips. This position requires the direct supervision of children, maintaining a caring, consistent, and enjoyable environment, and communicating with the Horizons leadership team.


Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Child Care Skills
    • Ensures a safe environment for all children, closely monitoring the group at all times
    • Involves self-positively with children through indoor and outdoor play and conversation, while still maintaining an awareness of the entire group
    • Responds to the range of children’s needs with acceptance and understanding and relates to children as individuals
    • Assists children in conflict resolution and steps in to provide support when needed
    • Facilitates smooth transitions for the children as they move from indoor to outdoor play, are checked in/out for the day, etc.
  • Communication Skills
    • Learn and use the names of children, parents, caregivers, and employees
    • Uses a warm and welcoming disposition when communicating with community members
    • Communicate to other staff and the leadership team important information and changes in activities, scheduling, problems, etc. Works well as a member of the team
    • Informs the Director in a clear and timely manner regarding any questions, concerns, or messages from parents, students, teachers, or other administrators
    • Addresses difficult situations with calm, appropriate attention
  • Professionalism
    • Familiarize oneself with camp policies, campers, and other staff
    • Consistently arrives on time, dressed appropriately for work of caring for and engaging with young children
  • Additional Duties
    • Sets up, manages, and cleans up materials used for both indoor and outdoor play and exploration.
    • Handles emergency situations with calm, consistent, and professional behavior

Skills and Requirements

  • Flexible, caring, enthusiastic disposition
  • Good cheer, humor, and warmth, balanced with professionalism and maturity
  • Prior work or experience with children ages three to fourteen
  • Ability to supervise large groups of children on a daily basis
  • An openness to making mistakes and trying new things
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to deal with emergencies
  • Some experience working in a summer camp environment is preferred, but not required
  • Fluency in Spanish preferred

  • lift up to 10 lbs of supply boxes

Additional Information

This is a part-time, seasonal, non-exempt position reporting to the Director of Equity and Inclusion and the Director of Community Engagement and Impact and under the direct supervision of the Horizons Program Coordinator. The start date is June 8, 2026, and the position will conclude on July 17, 2026. There will be a mandatory staff retreat and training on Saturday, June 6. Compensation will be offered an hourly non-exempt position paid at $17.50 an hour. This position provides an excellent opportunity to gain experience working with children and in an educational setting.
