Summary

Founded in 1898 as the nation’s first cancer center, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center helped pioneer the multidisciplinary model of cancer care that is now the standard across leading institutions worldwide. Designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute in 1974, Roswell Park remains the only center in Upstate New York to hold this distinction.

As a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, Roswell Park continues to shape the future of oncology through its contributions to the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology™—the global standard for evidence-based cancer care.

Today, with nearly 4,000 employees and more than 350 faculty, Roswell Park serves approximately 50,000 patients annually while advancing breakthroughs across research, education, and clinical innovation. Here, discovery is not theoretical—it is translated into patient impact every day.

The Opportunity

Roswell Park is seeking a visionary and collaborative physician leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine.

This department plays a vital and distinct role within the institution. Complementing the Department of Medicine—which houses medical oncology subspecialties—the Department of Internal Medicine brings together general internists and key subspecialists to deliver comprehensive, high-acuity care for patients with complex oncologic needs.

Core Areas Of Expertise Include

  • Cardiology
  • Pulmonary Medicine
  • Nephrology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Endocrinology
  • Infectious Diseases

This is a department at the intersection of complex medicine and cancer care, where clinical excellence directly enables cutting-edge oncology treatment and research.

The Role

The Chair will lead the continued evolution of the Department of Internal Medicine as a national model for integrated, cancer-focused subspecialty care.

This Leader Will

  • Shape Clinical Strategy & Growth

Expand access, strengthen subspecialty programs, and drive patient volume through innovation, efficiency, and strategic partnerships.

  • Advance Quality & Outcomes

Champion evidence-based care and elevate quality metrics in alignment with Roswell Park’s commitment to high-reliability, patient-centered care.

  • Elevate Academic & Research Integration

Foster collaboration across departments, supporting faculty as clinical experts, co-investigators, and contributors to translational and clinical research.

  • Build and Inspire Teams

Recruit, develop, and mentor exceptional faculty, with a strong emphasis on supporting early-career physicians and cultivating future leaders.

  • Strengthen National Reputation

Position the department—and its subspecialties—for greater national visibility and academic impact.

The Chair will report directly to the Physician-in-Chief and serve as a key member of the institution’s clinical leadership team.

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will be a respected physician leader who brings both clinical credibility and strategic vision.

Qualifications Include

  • Board certification in Internal Medicine (or relevant subspecialty)
  • Eligibility for appointment at the rank of Professor
  • Demonstrated success in academic leadership, including faculty development and mentorship
  • A track record of clinical excellence in complex or cancer-adjacent care
  • Experience advancing quality, safety, and operational performance
  • Strong alignment with multidisciplinary, team-based care models

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in oncology-focused environments or care of medically complex cancer patients
  • A record of peer-reviewed, funded research or meaningful scholarly contribution
  • Demonstrated ability to lead within a matrixed academic medical center

Why Roswell Park

This is a rare opportunity to lead within an institution where:

  • Clinical care, research, and education are deeply integrated
  • Physician leaders have a true voice in shaping strategy
  • Innovation is not aspirational—it is operational
  • The mission is both urgent and deeply human:

to eliminate cancer’s grip on humanity

And just as importantly, Buffalo offers a lifestyle that continues to surprise and retain top talent—accessible, vibrant, and grounded in a strong sense of community.

For the right leader, this is more than a Chair role—it is a chance to define how internal medicine supports and advances the future of cancer care.

  • Possession of or eligibility for a valid board certification in Internal Medicine and/or Internal Medicine subspecialty eligibility for a valid medical specialty certificate in Medical Oncology or a specialty of Hematologic Oncology, Bone Marrow Transplantation, Solid Tumor/Investigational Therapeutics, Pulmonary Medicine, and Infectious Diseases.
