Overview
The Energy Engineer Trainer develops and delivers technical training programs tailored to commercial and multifamily buildings. Audience’s typically include: operations & maintenance staff, multifamily property management teams, and senior management. The role focuses on practical, operations-focused energy management strategies that improve building performance, reduce utility costs, and support compliance with local energy regulations. The trainer ensures participants gain hands-on skills for identifying inefficiencies, operating equipment properly, and implementing cost-effective improvements across large and diverse building portfolios.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver training modules on HVAC operations, central plants, boilers/steam systems, heat pumps, domestic hot water systems, ventilation, lighting, controls, and building envelope fundamentals.
- Train hospital O&M staff on equipment troubleshooting, preventive maintenance practices, and day-to-day operational strategies that reduce energy load without compromising patient comfort or safety.
- Train multifamily property managers on building system basics, energy benchmarking, capital planning for efficiency upgrades, and behavior-based energy savings approaches.
- Conduct on-site walkthroughs, hands-on equipment demos, and operational assessments to contextualize training in real buildings.
- Create clear SOPs, quick-reference guides, checklists, and decision-support tools tailored to non-engineer audiences.
- Translate complex engineering concepts into practical, actionable instructions that facilities teams can implement immediately.
- Provide ongoing coaching, refresher sessions, and follow-up support to ensure retention and implementation.
- Stay current with regulatory requirements (e.g., LL87, LL88, LL97), utility incentives, safety requirements, and industry best practices to keep training accurate and up to date.
- Collaborate with hospital engineering leads, property management directors, and sustainability teams to identify training needs and skill gaps.
- Review energy use data and facility practices to design targeted training interventions.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Energy Engineering, Building Science, Facilities Management, or related field — or equivalent experience.
- 3 years of experience in building operations, energy auditing, commissioning, or facilities engineering.
- Ability to teach both technical and non-technical learners.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and group-facilitation skills.
- Experience creating training materials for front-line building operators.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of Healthcare Facility building systems (air handlers, chillers, boilers, isolation rooms, humidification, filtration) and Operations
- Knowledge of Multifamily systems (DHWS, ventilation, PTACs/VRF/ASHPs, lighting, envelope).
- Experience working directly with hospital facilities departments or multifamily portfolios.
- Familiarity with Joint Commission requirements, infection-control considerations, and hospital ventilation standards.
- Knowledge of NYC/utility incentives, building energy laws, and decarbonization strategies.
- Certifications like CEM, CEA, LEED AP, CPD, or professional engineering licensure.
