What are the responsibilities and job description for the Cemetery Caretaker position at ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH DIOCESE OF HOUMA THIBODAUX?
This position maintains Perpetual Care plots and buildings, maintains clean grounds, and prepares crypts and tombs for burials.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
(other duties may be assigned)
- Follows safety rules and regulations. Brings safety concerns to direct supervisor.
- Pressure wash buildings, equipment, and other structures as instructed.
- Cleans mausoleums, statues, and tombs as instructed.
- Pick up trash in cemetery and empty garbage cans in dumpster.
- Paint/refurbish Perpetual Care Tombs as necessary.
- Works individually or in partnership with others to properly ensure accuracy of interment/entombment, sets up graves, opens and closes graves, niches, and crypts.
- Works with supervisor to ensure all record keeping is done with accuracy.
- Will be required to travel to other cemeteries as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS TO PERFORM THE JOB SUCCESSFULLY:
Education and/or Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- General facilities maintenance knowledge
Other skills and Requirements:
- Must be able to successfully pass Safe Environment training.
- Must have knowledge of Catholic Church and its teachings
- Must be able to maintain a high-level confidentiality.
- Must be able to communicate clearly to all by phone, verbally, and in written form.
- Must be able to interpret oral and written instructions.
- Must hold driver’s license with good driving record
- Must be able to multi-task and set priorities
- Must be able to operate handheld tools, power tools and equipment, and measuring devices.
- Must be able to work outdoors in extreme environments (hot, cold, wet)
- Must be able to regularly walk and stand for long periods of time, perform strenuous activities, lift and/or move up to 75 pounds and frequently required to lift and/or move up to 150 pounds, reach with hands and arms, climb ladders, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear.
Work Schedule:
40 hours per week; Monday through Friday. 7AM-4PM
