Educational Opportunity Center/TRIO
Position Summary: The Educational Specialist works directly with participants and partner agencies conducting services on behalf of the Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) to ensure compliance in accordance with the grant contract with the U.S. Department of Education and RSU policies and procedures. The Educational Specialist assists the participant in returning to education. Services include assisting the participant in making application for enrollment in a postsecondary institution along with all facets of assistance with financial aid. This position is supervised by the EOC Director.
Primary Duties:
- Maintain the highest standards of ethical behavior and serves as an exemplary model of professional leadership;
- Willingness to serve on a weekly basis men and women in the Oklahoma Department of Corrections;
- Inform the administrators and service agency supervisors in the target area regarding the project services and goals of the program;
- Establish working relationships through personal contact and group meetings with service agencies of the target area. Conducts workshops for participant understanding of college and career technology curriculum;
- Encourage entrance and completion of post secondary institutions while assisting them to secure financial means to pay for their education. Provides academic advisement and disseminates academic information;
- Provide project participants with academic and career assessments;
- Assist individuals in gaining admission into post secondary institutions;
Secondary Duties:
- Maintain a willing attitude to seek creative ways to serve students, staff, peers and the RSU academic community through the RSU TRIO Student Affairs Department;
- Under guidance of the Director, gives referrals to community resources and other institutional support, as appropriate;
- Record and maintain student files through paper and database documentation for program accountability;
- Assist with follow-up of all students served in the program year;
- Participate in all in-service training as requested by the EOC Director, Student Affairs Department, RSU and performs other duties as assigned by the EOC Director.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Education, Educational Administration or Human Relations, or related areas;
- Experience with students of diverse backgrounds;
- Position requires flexible hours and variable work days and locations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Education, Educational Administration or Human Relations, or related areas;
- Experience with students of diverse backgrounds;
- Individual who has succeeded in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the project's target population;
- Experience with managing higher education, federal grant programs and TRIO programs;
- Proven track record for developing community partnerships and enhancing team development;
- Position requires flexible hours and variable work days and locations.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Ability to work with individuals, groups and organizations regarding personal and academic concerns in a service oriented environment;
- Possesses the ability to coach, mentor and motivate a diverse population while providing institutional information for the purpose of equipping the individuals and organizations to make a decision as to which educational institution will best meet
his/her needs; - Ability to provide written and verbal communication and interpret information regarding federal and state regulations towards EOC grants and others educational resources;
- Ability to operate a personal computer and office equipment that help organize daily tasks and perform detailed office work.
