The Controller is responsible for overseeing all accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, and compliance activities for Rockingham Cooperative. This role ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial records, supports strategic decision making, and maintains strong financial stewardship aligned with cooperative principles. The Controller partners closely with executive leadership to provide timely financial insight, ensure regulatory compliance, and strengthen financial processes across the organization.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Direct and oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, inventory accounting, and month-end/year-end close processes.
- Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
- Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting for management, board of directors, lenders, and auditors.
- Develop and maintain financial dashboards and reports to support operational and strategic decision making.
Budgeting, Forecasting & Analysis
- Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with executive leadership and department managers.
- Prepare financial forecasts, cash flow projections, and variance analyses.
- Provide actionable insights and recommendations to improve financial performance, cost control, and profitability.
Internal Controls & Compliance
- Design, implement, and monitor internal controls to safeguard cooperative assets and ensure financial integrity.
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including cooperative specific reporting requirements.
- Coordinate external audits, tax filings, and regulatory examinations; serve as primary liaison with auditors and external advisors.
Cash Management & Treasury
- Oversee cash management, banking relationships, and debt compliance.
- Monitor liquidity, working capital, and borrowing capacity.
- Support capital planning, financing strategies, and risk management initiatives.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff; promote cross-training and continuous improvement.
- Collaborate with executive leadership, operations, and HR to align financial practices with organizational goals.
- Support mergers, acquisitions, system integrations, and process improvements as needed.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Maintain and enhance accounting systems, ERP/HRIS integrations, and financial controls.
- Identify opportunities for automation, efficiency, and improved data accuracy.
- Ensure proper documentation of accounting policies, procedures, and controls.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required).
- CPA or CMA designation (preferred).
- Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive accounting or financial management experience.
- Experience in agriculture, manufacturing, distribution, or cooperative environments strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal control frameworks.
- Demonstrated analytical, problem-solving, and financial modeling skills.
- Proficiency with accounting systems, ERP platforms, and Microsoft Excel.
- Ability to communicate complex financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders.
- High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professional judgment.
Physical & Work Requirements
- Primarily office-based with extended periods of sitting and computer use.
- Occasional travel to cooperative locations, meetings, or external partners.
Reporting Relationship
- Reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
