DEFINITION
The custodial supervisor oversees and supervises the day to day custodial responsibilities to ensure a safe and clean environment in support of the district's mission to ensure that every student develops the enduring knowledge, skills and character to thrive in a changing world. This position is considered essential.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives direct supervision from the Custodial Services Assistant Director. Exercises day to day supervision over custodial staff.
PRIMARY DUTIES
- Train and evaluate head custodians and custodians; implement transfers, reassignment; coordinate work assignments and schedules; work with the Custodial Services Assistant Director to implement termination procedures based on performance and improvement process.
- Solicit from the building administrators feedback concerning the custodian's performance and work with custodians to improve performance as requested. Use the SMART inspection App. or applicable product for education , training , critiquing Head Custodian and Custodial staff.
- Coordinate special event custodial staffing requirements for the facilities; communicate the daily substitute and special event staffing requirements for the facilities with the principals and head custodians, which includes all extracurricular and snowplowing activities during evenings, weekends, holiday breaks, and summer vacation. Fills in as the Head Custodian when required.
- Assist with Implementing District provided training modules for all aspects and duties of the custodial department in compliance with the district, state, local, and federal standards; train in the proper use and cleaning of and monitor mechanical custodial equipment condition operation and suggest repair or replacement including equipment asset and tracking management, is also responsible for the new, remedial, and ongoing training for all custodians; document all training performed including snow removal power equipment.Works effectively from the work order system creates and completes assigned work orders in a timely fashion.
- Continually coach, motivate and monitor custodians (day and night shifts) to ensure training standards are adhered to and completed. Assist the Custodial Services Assistant Director with annual performance evaluations.
- Determine any equipment needs or supplies custodians required to carry out their duties and report them to the Assistant Custodial Services Director and Warehouse Custodial Rover.
- Train the proper use of and monitor employee safety equipment (including chemical usage safety equipment, PPEs, ladder safety.) and recommend to the Assistant Custodial Services Director for purchase or replacement of all PPEs and ladders. Completes a 24hr HazWoper training and remains current with an 8 hr. required annual refresher course. Remains current on all CDC recommendations for cleaning/disinfecting in educational facilities. Ensures all chemicals/disinfection guns are properly marked/dated and any literature is posted and up to date.
- Recommend products for purchase and use that meet quality and expenditure standards.
- Communicates with custodial staff regarding policies, procedures, changes, and schedules which affect them. Assists Assistant Custodial Services Director Department of Health (Garfield, Eagle and Pitkin Counties) annual assessments and Chemical Hygiene plans and Custodial Department policies. Provides written documentation on room high level disinfection in regards to positive Covid cases in the schools. Ensures weekly inspection rounding of the schools facilities and buildings and provides education and weekly documentation to the Custodial Services Assistant Director.
- May perform work in emergency situations; may serve on a 24-hour standby basis as required, including snow removal and de-icing needs. Assesses all sidewalks and walkways Mon-Fri to ensure they are free of snow and ice during the winter months. Applies ice melt if needed, reports significant snow and ice build up to the Custodial Services Assistant Director.
- Plan holiday and summer cleaning projects and schedules with the building principal and head custodians. Works with Custodial Services Assistant Director on vacation requests during these times to ensure adequate manpower needs.
- Assist in ensuring the Colorado State flag status is followed on all flag poles throughout the District. Ensures flags are in good order and orders replacement flags as needed. Follow the guidelines on proper flag disposal process.
- Works from the district's work order system assure recurring work orders are being kept up on eyewash stations, emergency lights, fire extinguishers etc.
- Ensures all outdoor waste receptacles are in good order and locked at all times.
- Assists the Custodial Services Assistant Director with the auctioning of depreciated/damaged equipment and Custodial Department items through the Public Surplus website.assures equipment is in an asset log and arranges equipment repairs.
- Any other duties assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Principles of supervision and training.
- Operations, services and activities of custodial operations.
- Understands basic computer knowledge
- Methods, techniques, materials, equipment, and tools used in custodial positions
- Operational characteristics and maintenance requirements of custodial maintenance tools, snow removal equipment and custodial equipment.
- Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
- Pertinent Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations.
Ability to:
- Supervise, organize and review the work of assigned staff.
- Select, coach, motivate, train and evaluate assigned staff.
- Independently perform the most difficult custodial work.
- Interpret, explain and enforce department policies and procedures.
- Use and operate hand tools, vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment, and power tools and equipment required for the work in a safe and efficient manner.
- Install, maintain and repair systems related to the area of assignment.
- Perform heavy manual labor in unfavorable weather conditions.

Experience and Training Guidelines
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: Three years of increasingly responsible custodial experience.
Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Additional supervisory training and experience is preferred.
License or Certificate: Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Environmental Conditions: Flexible work schedule to facilitate training for both day and night shifts. Travel from site to site; exposure to cleaning chemicals, noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gasses, inclement weather conditions; work at heights on scaffolding and ladders, work around construction equipment.
Physical Conditions: Primary functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for moderate or light lifting; bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, climbing, standing or walking for prolonged periods of time; operating motorized equipment and vehicles.
SALARY RANGE AND DAYS WORKED
Hourly range: $29.84 - $37.63/hour, depending on qualified experience
Days worked: 260 days/year (with paid personal and sick time, paid vacation days, and paid time off for holidays).
