The Senior Piping Designer leads and supports the delivery of comprehensive piping design and drafting services for high-complexity nuclear projects. Applying advanced technical expertise, this role ensures rigorous design quality and executes project deliverables in strict alignment with nuclear safety, regulatory mandates, and quality assurance standards. The ideal candidate will provide strategic design leadership, manage critical scope schedules, and foster multi-disciplinary coordination across brownfield and greenfield nuclear facility initiatives.

Core Responsibilities

  • Execute Project Management: Manage assigned piping design scopes, including the development of schedules, milestones, and deliverables, while optimizing staffing plans aligned with project scope and budget.
  • Maintain Regulatory & Quality Compliance: Apply client procedures, regulatory frameworks, and nuclear quality assurance requirements (such as NQA-1) to ensure full compliance with applicable nuclear codes and standards.
  • Oversee 3D Modeling & Design Control: Utilize advanced 3D modeling and review tools (PDMS, E3D, Navisworks) to define design areas, monitor progress, evaluate model quality, and review deliverables prior to Issued for Construction (IFC) authorization.
  • Manage Change & Scope Tracking: Maintain project information tracking tools—including Needs Lists—and monitor P&ID Management of Change (MOC) logs to identify and manage scope deviations proactively.
  • Cross-Discipline Coordination: Liaise effectively across engineering disciplines, Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC), and project management teams to ensure seamless design integration and deliverable verification.
  • Perform Field Integration & Data Collection: Conduct field walkdowns to verify P&IDs, capture precise measurements, identify tie-in points, evaluate routing constraints, and integrate laser scan data into 3D models for brownfield facility projects.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience: 10 years of dedicated piping design experience, including demonstrated leadership or senior-level roles supporting nuclear facilities or similarly regulated environments.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of formal technical education and extensive industry experience.
  • Technical Expertise: Advanced proficiency with 3D modeling software (PDMS/E3D), isometric preparation, layout design, and integration of field measurements/laser scan data.
  • Codes & Standards: Comprehensive familiarity with nuclear codes, standards, and quality frameworks, including ASME Section III, ASME B31.1, and NQA-1 programs.
  • Change Management: Proven working knowledge of nuclear safety culture, design control procedures, and P&ID MOC scope management processes.
  • Work Authorization: Valid authorization to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency with Navisworks, SharePoint, and advanced laser scanning processing tools.
  • Advanced expertise in leading brownfield nuclear piping modification projects within heavily constrained spatial environments.
  • High-level communication, organizational, and technical problem-solving capabilities.
