The Communications Systems Specialist is responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and optimization of field communication networks supporting oil and gas operations. The position requires strong technical expertise in wireless communications, networking, and field infrastructure, along with a commitment to safety and operational excellence.
ResponsibilitiesField Communications & Network Management
- Design, install, and maintain wireless communication systems, including point-to-point and point-to-multipoint networks
- Monitor network performance and troubleshoot communication outages or system failures
- Ensure reliability and integrity of communication infrastructure, including towers, antennas, and associated hardware
- Perform line-of-sight (LOS) analysis and support network expansion planning
- Diagnose and resolve issues related to networking, radio frequency (RF) systems, and communication equipment
- Support field personnel with communication system training and troubleshooting
- Maintain firmware, configurations, and system updates for communication devices
- Coordinate installation and maintenance activities with contractors and internal teams
- Oversee contractor work to ensure safe practices and efficient use of resources
- Support planning and execution of communication infrastructure projects
- Maintain accurate documentation of network configurations, equipment, and inventory
- Track and forecast equipment and material needs
- Ensure proper recordkeeping for system changes and upgrades
- Ensure all work complies with safety standards, regulations, and best practices
- Support adherence to environmental, health, and safety programs
- Maintain awareness of applicable regulatory requirements for communication systems
- Evaluate and implement new communication technologies and solutions
- Identify opportunities to improve system performance and cost efficiency
- Support cross-functional collaboration to enhance operational effectiveness
- Strong knowledge of wireless communication systems (RF, microwave, and radio systems)
- Proficiency in networking protocols (TCP/IP, routing, switching, Ethernet)
- Experience with line-of-sight analysis and RF coverage planning
- Familiarity with communication infrastructure such as towers, antennas, and cabling
- Ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues in field environments
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Effective communication and collaboration across technical and non-technical teams
- Organizational and documentation skills with attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s degree or technical certification preferred
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in communications systems, networking, or related field
- Experience in industrial or field-based environments preferred
- Knowledge of wireless system design, RF technologies, and network infrastructure
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements related to communication systems (e.g., permitting, compliance) preferred
- Experience coordinating contractors or field installations is an asset
- Demonstrated commitment to safety and operational excellence
