The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) delivers skilled, compassionate, and evidence-based nursing care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or licensed provider. This position is vital in a hospital setting, where LPNs contribute to comprehensive care for patients with medical-surgical needs. The LPN operates within the scope defined by the Louisiana State Board of Practical Nurse Examiners (LSBPNE) and adheres to hospital policies and procedures

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide direct patient care based on the individualized plan of care, under supervision of RN or provider.
  • Monitor and document patient responses to interventions, reporting abnormal findings promptly.
  • Administer medications (excluding IV push per hospital policy), monitor for adverse reactions, and ensure accurate documentation.
  • Assist with treatments, wound care, catheter insertion, ostomy care, and enemas.
  • Collect specimens such as blood, urine, sputum, or stool following hospital protocol.
  • Support patient mobility and hygiene, including repositioning, ambulating, and toileting.
  • Participate in admission, discharge, and transfer processes, including patient education.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Supervise unlicensed assistive personnel (e.g., nurse techs, CNAs) within scope and training.
  • Follow infection prevention protocols and contribute to a safe patient care environment.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members to support optimal outcomes in a resource-limited rural setting.
  • Respond to emergencies and participate in code situations as appropriate for licensure.
  • Actively participates in all quality assurance, performance improvement activities.
  • Operate standard office equipment, including computers, copiers, printers, telephones, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Training:

  • Graduate of an accredited Practical Nursing Program.
  • Active LPN license in the State of Louisiana (unencumbered) as issued by LSBPNE.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • IV therapy certification preferred.

Work Experience:

  • 1 years of clinical nursing experience preferred (rural or acute care setting ideal).
  • New graduates welcome with adequate supervision and training.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Proficient in medication administration, basic nursing procedures, and documentation.
  • Familiar with medical terminology, infection control, and patient safety standards.
  • Strong judgment and prioritization skills in a fast-paced rural hospital setting.
  • Competent use of electronic medical records and basic computer software.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of HIPAA policies and regulations
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member to communicate clearly, compassionately, and respectfully, with all health professionals, as well as with administrative support staff.
  • Ability to flexibly respond to changing demands within the work environment.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks, time, and responsibilities effectively, as well as to work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, and the public.

Mental & Physical Requirements:

  • Physically demanding environment including walking, standing, lifting up to 50 lbs, and assisting with patient movement.
  • Exposure to illness, bloodborne pathogens, and hospital-grade cleaning agents.
  • Rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays, may be required based on facility needs.
  • Must be comfortable working in a rural healthcare setting with limited specialty support.
  • Ability to tolerate mental and emotional distress as an anticipated aspect of the position.
  • May require working under stressful conditions.
