WELDER
Description:
Responsible for laying out, fitting, and welding metal components for a variety of fabrication projects. Typical work includes welding on tanks, structural assemblies, steps, walkways, and other miscellaneous parts or custom projects. Reads blueprints, follows specifications, and performs welding across multiple positions using approved processes. Maintains safety, quality, and compliance with company standards and customer requirements.
ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS:
Reports to upper management responsible for production and welding oversight.
Works independently or as part of a team to complete fabrication and welding assignments. Job tasks may vary based on project needs and welder class certification.
INTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:
Collaborates with other welders, fitters, quality inspectors, and production staff. Coordinates with supervisors on daily assignments and ensures adherence to project requirements and safety practices.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Welding & Fabrication:
- Read and interpret blueprints, job specifications, and work orders.
- Plan work sequences and select appropriate tools and welding methods.
- Position, clamp, and tack components to prepare for welding.
- Perform welding using SMAW, GMAW, and FCAW processes in various positions (flat, vertical, overhead, etc.).
- Apply filler metal as needed and ensure proper fusion, bead appearance, and penetration.
- Clean and prepare joints using wire brushes, grinders, or chemical solutions.
- Remove slag and excess weld material.
- Perform part repairs, rework, and adjustments when needed.
- Complete tasks independently with minimal supervision.
Safety & Quality:
- Inspect own welds to ensure conformance with specifications.
- Use proper PPE and follow all safety protocols.
- Participate in quality checks and corrective actions when issues arise.
DECISION MAKING:
Follows established welding procedures and blueprints. Exercises judgment in weld setup, technique, and quality control. Reports issues or concerns to supervisors and works within defined guidelines.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Experience:
Job classification determined by welder class status (see below). Experience in structural welding or custom fabrication preferred.
Skills:
- Proficiency in reading blueprints and welding symbols
- Ability to weld in multiple positions using approved methods
- Knowledge of safety procedures and ability to work independently
- Attention to detail and commitment to workmanship standards
